Google Maps Gets New Features in India: Conversational Driving, Navatars, and Traffic Alerts

Google Maps in India introduced several new features on Thursday (November 5), including a conversational driving experience, customizable "Navatars", and proactive traffic alerts. These updates aim to make your navigation experience smoother, more intuitive, and personalised. Let's take a look at how these updates will work:

Conversational Driving Experience

Indian users will get to experience a new hands-free, conversational driving experience on Maps, bringing Gemini's voice interaction capabilities. It will help you navigate effortlessly while keeping your focus on the road.

Google Maps Gets New Features in India

With this feature, you can ask for places along your route - like "Find the nearest petrol pump " - or get quick details about your destination, such as "Is parking available there?" You can even handle multi-step requests, for example, asking Maps to find a restaurant and then saying, "Okay, let's go there."

You can also operate other apps; you just have to say, "Add a calendar event for this meeting tomorrow at 5 p.m.," and, with your permission, Gemini will automatically will do this for you.

Moreover, Gemini will now proactively analyze and summarize Maps reviews and web content to offer real-world insights. For instance, if you're planning to visit Delhi's Dilli Haat, Maps will highlight tips like "It's okay to bargain for prices" or "The momos at the Nagaland stall are highly rated."

In short, whether you're exploring new spots or commuting daily, this update makes navigation smarter - helping you find nearby places, parking options, and personalized recommendations effortlessly.

Customizable Navatars

Google Maps will let you personalize your navigation icon by choosing from different two-wheeler types like classic motorbikes, sports bikes, or scooters, which are available in eight colours. It will be rolling out over the coming weeks, first to Android users across India.

Google Maps now offers voice support for flyovers, which provides clearer, hands-free audio guidance in nine Indian languages. This will be available for both Android and iOS users over the coming weeks.

Moreover, Android users can now save purchased metro tickets directly to Google Wallet and access them seamlessly from Maps when needed.

Traffic Alerts

Google Maps now acts as your smart lookout, even if you're not actively navigating. With new Proactive Traffic Alerts, the app will automatically notify you of any major disruptions or delays on your route, showing how severe the delay is and how much extra time will be added to your ETA.

In addition, Google is introducing Accident-Prone Area Alerts. Maps will alert you - both visually and via voice - as you approach accident-prone zones, helping you slow down and drive safely. This feature is initially rolling out to Android users in Gurugram, Cyberabad, Chandigarh, and Faridabad.

Google Maps will also now display official speed limits directly beside the in-app speedometer. This update is rolling out to Android and iOS users across nine Indian cities, including Faridabad, Ghaziabad, Gurugram, Hyderabad (including Cyberabad), Jaipur, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, and Noida.
