Instagram Adds Reposts, Friends Tab, and Map Features — Here's How They Work

Meta has introduced new features on Instagram to help you better connect with your friends and followers. You can now repost your favorite Reels or posts, and choose to share your last active location with selected followers. Additionally, a new "Friends" tab is being added to Reels, making it easier to discover what your friends are enjoying.

You Can Repost Reels and Posts - Here's How

Instagram is getting reposts option, which will let you repost public reels and feed posts. Reposts will be recommended to your friends' and followers' feeds, and they'll also be in a separate tab on your profile.

However, reposts are credited to the original poster. For instance, if you're a creator, and if your content is reposted by someone else, it may be recommended to that person's followers, even if those people don't follow you.

To repost a reel or post, just tap the repost icon. In addition, you can add a note to your repost by typing into the thought bubble that appears on screen.

You Can Now Connect with Friends Using the Instagram Map

Instagram now lets you choose to share your last active location with select followers, and you can turn it off anytime. You can also open a map to discover posts from your friends and favorite creators, shared from exciting and interesting locations.

However, Instagram's new location-sharing feature is completely optional and turned off by default. If you choose to opt in, you'll have full control over how and with whom your location is shared. You can decide who sees your location and to share location with close Friends, only selected friends, or no one.

Additionally, you can choose to not share your location in specific places or with specific people and your location will be updated whenever you open the app or return to the app if it's been running in the background.

If you're a parent with supervision set up for your teen, you'll be notified if your teen starts sharing their location. You can manage their access to location sharing and see who they're sharing it with. Moreover, you can also use the map to explore location-based content. The Instagram map will be placed at the top of your DM inbox. However, this feature is currently rolling out to the US, with expected global availability soon.

Friends Tab

A new Friends Tab will be available in Reels where you can see public content your friends have interacted with, or recommendations from Blends you've started, and easily start conversations about them. To access your Friends tab, tap on the "Friends" tab at the top of Reels.

You can easily return to your usual Reels feed by tapping the "Reels" tab. In addition, users will have controls for what's shown in the Friends tab, including the ability to hide likes and comments on reels and to mute activity bubbles from specific people they follow.
