WhatsApp’s New Group Message History Feature Lets New Members Catch Up
WhatsApp is rolling out a new feature aimed at solving a familiar problem in group chats. Called Group Message History, the update is designed to help new members understand ongoing conversations without asking others to resend older messages or share screenshots.

Until now, anyone added to a WhatsApp group could only see messages sent after they joined. That often meant missing context, especially in work, community, or long-running family groups. The new feature changes that, while still keeping privacy controls in place.
How Group Message History Works
With Group Message History enabled, group admins can choose to share recent messages with new members at the time they’re added. WhatsApp says admins can decide whether the feature is active at all and how much context is shared.
The message history can start from as few as 25 messages and go up to a maximum of 100. This keeps the focus on recent context rather than dumping an entire chat history on someone new. Importantly, sending message history isn’t automatic. It’s a deliberate action, and admins also have the option to disable it entirely for their groups.
Admins will always retain the ability to share message history, even if the setting is turned off for regular members.
Privacy And Transparency Remain Central
WhatsApp is stressing that Group Message History doesn’t weaken its privacy model. Shared messages remain end-to-end encrypted, meaning only people inside the group can access them. The company says this update doesn’t change how encryption works on the platform.
To avoid confusion, everyone in the group is notified when message history is sent to a new member. The shared messages include clear timestamps and sender details, and they appear visually distinct from regular messages. This makes it obvious what content was shared and when.
Rollout And Availability
The feature has started rolling out globally and will become available on both Android and iOS versions of WhatsApp. Users who don’t see it yet may need to update the app and wait for the rollout to reach their region.
