80% Of Android Apps Use “Transport Layer Security”, Says Google

Google is working hard to keep itself projected as a leading giant search engine. One of the prime reasons why users have predominantly relied on Google is security. Using "Transport Layer Security"(TLS), Google encrypts network traffic that enters or leaves an Android device. According to Google, ever since TLS came into the picture, there have been 80% of Android apps that use TLS for data protection.

80% Of Android Apps Use “Transport Layer Security”, Says Google

Last year, Google proposed a new guideline for all the Android apps. The guideline reveals that any particular Android version (API level 28) or a higher version OS would default to HTTPS connections. However, coders still have a preference to use cleartext for certain domains. If we look at the graph depicted below, from January 2018 to October 2019, cleartext which used to breach the secured data, has now greatly reduced. And the percentage of apps increased drastically over a year that stop cleartext by default.

To make sure the data is highly protected, Google creates a warning message in Android Studio in case any app gets unauthorized data. Following the warning message, developers use HTTPS to secure the app.

What Is "Transport Layer Security"

Transport Layer Security (TLS) is the successor to the Secure Sockets Layer (SSL). And, by definition TLS is a cryptographic protocol that offers highly protected communications via internet. Besides, TLS offers the apps with more private information like 'forward secrecy', which makes sure that any future revelation of protected keys can't be used to decode any TLS communications mentioned in the past record.

Other than that, Google has ensured that whatever messages are typed or sent across different domains are greatly secured. In the wake of it, it offers a "Message Log Search" option. That shows how any message is developed, filtered and finally delivered. Furthermore, the log search option will let the administrators have an insight into the traffic patterns for the domains.
