Google brings Android Pay and Google Wallet together with the launch of Google Pay
This new payment service will be released online over the coming weeks, in store (NFC payments) as well as across various Google Products including Tez.
Google has announced the launch of Google Pay to integrate Android Pay and Google Wallet into a single payments platform. This new payment service will be released online over the coming weeks, in store (NFC payments) as well as across various Google Products including Tez.
"With Google Pay, it'll be easier for you to use the payment information saved to your Google Account, so you can speed through checkout with peace of mind," said Pali Bhat, VP of Product Management, Payments at Google. Google Pay has already been rolled out to many apps apps including Airbnb, Dice, Fandango, HungryHouse, Instacart, and others. The company is also giving out limited period offers on B&H, Fandango, and Instacart.
In case you are wondering, you will still be able to see the universal Google Pay Logo while purchasing content from Play Store.
Google also stated in the blog post that it "will also be bringing these experiences to Tez users in India." However, it is unclear at this moment whether Tez will be rebranded as Google Pay too. It should be noted that Tez is different from Android Pay and Google Wallet since it is based on the UPI interface.
As we have mentioned earlier, Google Pay branding is actually replacing the Android Pay and Google Wallet branding. Just to remind you, Android Pay was introduced back in 2015 to make digital payments at store. Google Wallet, on the other hand, is a peer-to-peer payments service that allows people to send and receive money from a mobile device or desktop computer for free.
It is pretty apparent that with the launch of Google Pay, the search engine giant wants to bring all its digital payment services under one umbrella. However, the company should keep in mind that its new online payment service will have to compete with the likes of Apple Pay and Samsung Pay.
The launch of Google Pay also indicates how payments via digital transactions is slowly becoming a norm. Seems like, it would not be long before the worlds starts to lean towards a cashless economy. We can also see the reason as digital transactions removes the requiremnet of carrying cash or standing in long queues.
