iPhone users were rejoiced when Apple introduced the "Live Photos" feature a couple of years ago. This feature basically brings your photos to life by recording a few seconds of video when someone is actually capturing an image with their iPhone.

Google Photos for all platforms now supports Live Photos

The iPhone's camera captures just enough movement before and after the shutter button is pressed to create a 1.5-second animation. However, unlike a video, it's a single JPEG file that consists of a series of images. It is kind of like a GIF but with audio. By default, a Live Photo looks like a still image, but when you tap on the picture it briefly springs to life.

Up until now, Live Photos were exclusive to iPhone users. While some popular social media apps such as Facebook offers support for Live Photos, you could only view them on iOS devices. The good news is, Google also introduced a new feature called Motion Photos to the recently launched Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL smartphones.

Although the feature is currently only available on the aforementioned devices, we are hoping for updates soon. Additionally, the search engine giant has also updated its Google Photos platform to be able to store and play back the moving pictures.

If you ask whether there is any difference between Apple's Live Photos and Google's Motion Photos, they are exactly the same. However, we can't help but wonder why it took so long for Google to finally come up with this feature. Well, better late than never.

It should also be noted that if you own an iPhone but store your images in the Google Photo cloud, you will be able to view your Live Photos in their true form. Not only Android devices, the desktop version of Google Photos will also carry support for both Live Photos and Motion Photos.
