Instagram and Threads May Soon Let Users Add Context to Posts with X-Like Community Notes Feature

Instagram is reportedly working on a Community Notes feature, aiming to give users a way to provide additional context and diverse perspectives on posts. This comes after Meta, Instagram's parent company, announced it would be phasing out its traditional fact-checking program, shifting to a more community-driven approach.

Instagram and Threads Testing X-Like Community Notes Feature

What Are Community Notes?

Community Notes is a feature designed to let users write notes or add context to posts that might contain misleading or incomplete information. Developer Alessandro Paluzzi (@alex193a) shared on Threads that Instagram is currently testing this feature, though it's not yet available to the public.

A screenshot posted by Paluzzi shows that the option to add a note might appear when tapping the three vertical dots on a post, labeled as "Write community note." Once submitted, the notes would be reviewed by the community, and if deemed helpful, they could be published beneath the post.

Meta has yet to reveal how users will be selected to participate in the program or the criteria for reviewing these notes. However, the goal is to bring in diverse perspectives and give users a voice in combating misinformation.

Meta's Shift in Content Moderation

The move to Community Notes follows Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg's decision to discontinue the company's traditional fact-checking program. In a series of posts on Threads, Zuckerberg explained the shift:

"We're going back to our roots of free expression and giving people a voice on our platforms."

He also announced plans to simplify Meta's content policies, removing restrictions on topics like immigration and gender, which he argued were "out of touch with mainstream discourse."

This change signals a broader shift from centralized fact-checking to a more collaborative, community-driven approach, though questions remain about how effective it will be.

Drawing Inspiration from X

If this concept sounds familiar, it's because it was first introduced by X (formerly Twitter) in 2021. Known as Community Notes on X, the feature gained traction under Elon Musk's ownership, with the goal of providing transparency and reducing misinformation.

However, X's Community Notes has faced criticism, with some arguing it takes power away from independent organizations and places it in the hands of arbitrarily selected users. Whether Instagram's implementation will address these concerns remains to be seen.

What's Next?

Meta has confirmed that Community Notes will first roll out in the United States before expanding to other regions. The feature is reportedly at an advanced stage on Threads, which could mean a similar rollout for Instagram isn't far off.
