Sanchar Saathi App Can Be Deleted, Government Clarifies After Backlash

The Sanchar Saathi story has taken a sharp turn in just 24 hours. What started as a full-blown privacy controversy is now looking a little different after Union minister Jyotiraditya Scindia stepped in and cleared the air. And honestly, the clarification changes a lot of the initial panic around the app.

Sanchar Saathi App Can Be Deleted, Government Clarifies After Backlash

Users Can Delete the App, Government Says

Scindia kept it simple when speaking to ANI. He said the government’s responsibility is to introduce the app to people. What they do after that is their choice. In his words, if you don’t want Sanchar Saathi on your phone, you can delete it.

That one line is important because the earlier reports suggested the app would be preloaded on all new smartphones with no option to remove it. Naturally, that raised eyebrows everywhere. Indians already deal with enough preinstalled apps, so the idea of another mandatory system app — especially one linked to security — sparked a lot of pushback.

Why the App Became Such a Flashpoint

Sanchar Saathi isn’t a random government app. It’s been around since 2023 and is actually quite useful for a lot of people. It helps you block or track a lost phone, check if someone has taken a SIM card in your name, report fraud calls and spam messages, and even verify whether a phone being sold is genuine.

The app and portal together have helped trace over 26 lakh stolen or missing phones so far. That’s a big number, and it’s the main reason the government wants more people to know it exists.

But usefulness isn’t the issue here. The moment reports said it would be mandatory, privacy concerns exploded. Opposition leaders called it a surveillance tool. Congress MP Renuka Chowdhury even filed a motion in Parliament to stop other work and discuss the app. Shashi Tharoor, who often takes a more balanced view, said anything compulsory in a democracy needs careful explanation and public debate.

BJP Pushes Back, Citing Cybersecurity

BJP leaders defended the move, saying the aim is to make people safer. MP Shashank Mani Tripathi said rising cyberattacks make tools like this necessary. His argument was that the app improves digital security and keeps user data from leaking into the wrong hands.

Parliamentary affairs minister Kiren Rijiju also commented, saying the Opposition was manufacturing issues to stall the winter session instead of discussing everything in an orderly way.

What This Means for You

For regular smartphone users, the key takeaway is straightforward: the app may still come preinstalled, but you’ll be able to delete it. That alone removes the biggest concern people had yesterday.

What’s still unclear is how exactly smartphone brands will roll this out, especially with earlier instructions pointing toward mandatory preloading. With companies like Apple, Samsung, Xiaomi, Vivo, and others involved, we’ll likely get more clarity soon.
