WhatsApp Banned Over 98 Lakh Accounts in June in India, Citing Harmful Activity

WhatsApp, the Meta-owned instant messaging app, has banned over 98 lakh accounts in India in June. This action was part of its ongoing efforts to curb misuse and enhance user safety. The company reported that more than 19 lakh of these accounts were proactively banned before any user complaints were received.

In its monthly compliance report, WhatsApp disclosed that it had received 23,596 complaints from users in June in India. These complaints covered various issues, including account support, ban appeals, and product support-related queries. Out of these, the platform took action on 1,001 cases after reviewing them thoroughly.

WhatsApp Focuses on User Safety

The messaging service has been actively working to improve its security measures. It aims to prevent spam and abuse on the platform by using advanced technology and user feedback. The company stated that it deploys tools and resources to prevent harmful behaviour on the platform.

The Meta-owned messaging app states that ''We are particularly focused on prevention because we believe it is much better to stop harmful activity from happening in the first place than to detect it after harm has occurred.''

The platform's abuse detection mechanism works at three key stages of an account's lifecycle - at registration, during messaging, and in response to negative feedback such as user reports and blocks. A dedicated team of analysts supports these automated systems by reviewing edge cases to continually improve accuracy.

The company's ongoing efforts reflect its dedication to creating a secure environment where users can communicate freely without fear of abuse or harassment.
