WhatsApp to Let Users Make Calls Using Usernames Instead of Phone Numbers: Report

The "Search and Call Using Username" feature is already in development for WhatsApp on iOS. However, WhatsApp is now working on the same functionality for Android, which was spotted in the WhatsApp beta for the Android 2.25.33.2 update.

Here's How "Search and Call Using Username" Will Work

According to WABetaInfo, WhatsApp's upcoming feature will allow you to make voice and video calls to others using usernames instead of phone numbers. This will simplify for people to connect on the platform while protecting their privacy.

The option will be linked to a unique username, which is expected to roll out in a future update. Users will be able to open the Calls tab and find a search bar where they can enter a name, phone number, or username. This feature will work even if the person isn't in their contact list, allowing broader connectivity across the platform. All calls made using usernames will remain protected by WhatsApp's industry-standard end-to-end encryption.

The report further suggests that username-based calls will offer the same features and quality as traditional calls made via phone numbers. You will be able to switch seamlessly between voice and video calls, with group calls and other advanced options remaining fully supported. While there's no exact timeline yet, the feature is expected to roll out in the coming months.
