You Can Soon Set WhatsApp Messages to Disappear After Being Read: Report

WhatsApp is reportedly working on a new feature that will allow messages to disappear after they are read. Currently, users can choose a timer of 24 hours, 7 days, or 90 days, after which the messages automatically disappear from the chat.

Now, WABetaInfo reports the Meta-owned platform is testing additional timer options to offer more flexibility. The new update could bring more timer settings, including shorter durations for messages to automatically disappear. Here's what the new report suggests:

WhatsApp Will Let Messages Disappear After Being Read

An earlier report by WABetaInfo suggested that WhatsApp was also experimenting with shorter timers, allowing users to choose durations between 1 hour and 12 hours for disappearing messages. Now, the instant messaging app is said to be working on a feature that will make messages disappear shortly after they are read.

The shared screenshot reveals that WhatsApp's new timer option is called "After reading". Once enabled, messages will disappear from the sender's chat 15 minutes after they are sent. However, on the recipient's side, messages will vanish 15 minutes after they are read.

If the recipient does not open the message, it will automatically disappear after 24 hours. Users will reportedly be able to enable this timer either for individual chats or set it as the default for all conversations. Moreover, the feature is currently under development and is expected to roll out in a future update.
