Airtel Starts Rolling Out AI-Powered Fraud Alerts to Warn Users About OTP Scams
Airtel is adding another layer to its growing anti-fraud toolkit. The telecom operator has announced a new Fraud Alerts system that aims to warn users about OTP-based bank scams while a suspicious call is still in progress.

The feature is currently live in Haryana and will be rolled out to Airtel users across India over the next two weeks.
What Airtel’s Fraud Alerts Are Trying To Solve
OTP scams have become one of the easiest ways for fraudsters to access bank accounts. A call comes in, the situation is made to sound urgent, and the victim is pressured into sharing a one-time password meant for a banking transaction.
Airtel says its new Fraud Alerts system is designed to interrupt that moment. When a user receives an OTP via SMS and then gets an incoming call soon after, Airtel’s network-level AI looks for patterns that indicate a potentially risky situation.
If something looks off, the system sends a warning to the user during the call itself, cautioning them against sharing banking OTPs or approving transactions under pressure.
How The System Works In Practice
The key detail here is that the detection happens at the network level. Users don’t need to download an app, change settings, or opt in manually. Once the feature is live in a region, it works automatically in the background.
Airtel says the alerts are meant to be real-time and contextual, stepping in only when there’s a risk tied specifically to OTP misuse rather than flagging every unknown call.
Why OTP Scams Are So Effective
According to Airtel, fraudsters take advantage of how normal OTPs have become in daily life. From deliveries to logins, people are used to receiving them several times a day. That familiarity makes it easier for bad actors to blur the line between routine verification and actual banking transactions.
By exploiting urgency and confusion, scammers are able to convince users to share OTPs that give direct access to their savings.
What Users Should Expect
For now, users in Haryana will see the feature first. Airtel says nationwide coverage should follow within two weeks. Since the alerts work automatically, users won’t need to do anything once the rollout reaches their circle.
How effective the system proves to be will depend on accuracy and timing, but it’s a clear attempt to slow scams down at the moment they usually succeed.
