Amazon Web Services and OpenAI Announce Landmark $38 Billion AI Collaboration

Amazon Web Services (AWS) and OpenAI have entered into a strategic partnership that will span several years. This collaboration allows OpenAI to utilise AWS's top-tier infrastructure for scaling its core artificial intelligence (AI) operations. The agreement, valued at $38 billion, is set to grow over the next seven years.

OpenAI now has access to AWS's extensive computing resources, which include hundreds of thousands of advanced NVIDIA GPUs. This setup can expand to accommodate tens of millions of CPUs, enabling rapid scaling of AI workloads. AWS's expertise in managing large-scale AI infrastructure securely and reliably is a key advantage, with clusters exceeding 500K chips.

Advanced Infrastructure for AI Workloads

The infrastructure being developed by AWS for OpenAI is designed with an advanced architectural framework. This setup maximises AI processing efficiency and performance. By clustering NVIDIA GPUs—specifically GB200s and GB300s—through Amazon EC2 UltraServers on the same network, low-latency performance across interconnected systems is achieved. This enables OpenAI to run workloads efficiently with optimal performance.

The clusters are versatile enough to support various tasks, from serving inference for ChatGPT to training future models. They are adaptable to meet OpenAI's changing requirements. This collaboration continues the companies' efforts to deliver state-of-the-art AI technology globally.

Expanding AI Model Availability

Earlier this year, OpenAI made its open weight foundation models available on Amazon Bedrock. This move provided millions of AWS customers with additional model options. OpenAI has rapidly become one of the most sought-after model providers on Amazon Bedrock.

Thousands of customers, including Bystreet, Comscore, Peloton, Thomson Reuters, Triomics, and Verana Health, are utilising these models for diverse applications such as agentic workflows, coding, scientific analysis, and mathematical problem-solving.

The partnership between AWS and OpenAI combines AWS's leadership in cloud infrastructure with OpenAI's pioneering advancements in generative AI. This synergy aims to continue delivering value through ChatGPT to millions of users worldwide.
