Anthropic’s Claude AI Faces Widespread Outage: Users Report Chat Issues And Connection Failures

Claude users in India and several other markets reported access problems on 18 June 2026, with many saying Anthropic’s AI chatbot was failing to load chats, send prompts or stay connected. The disruption appears to be affecting both casual users and professionals who rely on Claude for writing, coding, research and workplace automation.

Outage reports on Downdetector began rising around 12:15 PM IST, according to the available user-report data. More than 2,200 reports were visible from India, while over 2,000 users in the US also flagged problems with the service. User-reported outage trackers do not confirm the technical cause, but they are often an early signal of a wider service disruption.

Claude down reports point to chat and app issues

The largest share of complaints was linked to Claude Chat, which users said was not responding properly or was throwing connection errors. Around 63 percent of reported issues were related to chat access. Another 22 percent pointed to app-related problems, while 11 percent mentioned the Claude website.

Several users also posted screenshots and complaints on X, saying Claude was either unavailable or repeatedly disconnecting during active work. Some users said their pending tasks were stuck, while others joked that the chatbot “didn’t want to chat”. The posts indicate that the disruption was noticeable during working hours in India, when many users depend on AI tools for productivity tasks.

Anthropic had not issued a specific public explanation for the 18 June disruption at the time of writing. The company’s official status page is the best place for users to check confirmed incidents, restoration updates and affected services. Until Anthropic identifies the cause, it is not possible to say whether the issue is related to Claude’s web app, mobile app, API infrastructure or a specific model.

Why the Claude Outage Matters in India

The outage highlights how quickly AI assistants have moved from experimental tools to daily work infrastructure. In India, Claude is used by developers, students, marketers, editors and business teams for drafting, summarising, coding and analysis. Even a short interruption can affect deadlines when users have built workflows around one AI platform.

For users facing the issue, the practical options are limited. Refreshing the page, checking the mobile app, switching networks or signing out and back in may help only if the problem is local. If the disruption is on Anthropic’s side, users will need to wait for the service to stabilise.

Users working on urgent tasks should avoid repeatedly submitting the same prompt if Claude is unstable. It is safer to save drafts locally, export important chats when access returns, and keep an alternative AI tool ready for time-sensitive work. The incident is also a reminder that cloud-based AI services can face downtime, even when they are widely used.
