ChatGPT Adult Mode Reportedly Launching in First Quarter of 2026
OpenAI is preparing to launch an "Adult Mode" for ChatGPT next year, and the feature has now been officially confirmed. Fidji Simo, OpenAI's CEO of Applications, revealed during a briefing around GPT-5.2 that the company expects Adult Mode to roll out in the first quarter of 2026.
ChatGPT Adult Mode Gets A Launch Timeline
According to Simo, OpenAI is currently testing its new AI-powered age prediction and verification system in select countries. Unlike the opt-in honour system, OpenAI plans to rely on AI-driven age verification system to ensure responsible access. Adult Mode will remain disabled by default and will be strictly opt-in, meaning users will need to explicitly request access and successfully complete the verification process to unlock adult-orientated content.

If testing proceeds as planned, OpenAI expects to begin rolling out Adult Mode in early 2026, with the United States said to be the first market to receive access. Additional regions are expected to follow gradually.
Back in October, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said ChatGPT was made more restrictive to carefully address serious mental health concerns, even though it reduced enjoyment for some users. Now, with improved safeguards and new tools in place, OpenAI plans to safely relax many of those restrictions.
In the coming weeks, a new version of ChatGPT will introduce more customizable personalities-allowing responses to feel more human, expressive, or friend-like, if users choose. By December, as age-gating expands under OpenAI's "treat adults like adults" approach, verified adult users will also gain access to more content, including erotica.
