ChatGPT Can Now Make UPI Payments and Order Groceries from BigBasket

Razorpay, the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), and OpenAI are collaborating to introduce Agentic Payments on ChatGPT. This initiative aims to revolutionise AI-driven commerce across India. Currently in its pilot phase, this project promises a new era of intelligent and seamless digital transactions through conversational AI.

The landscape of online shopping is changing swiftly. Now, you can explore products and services using AI Assistants like ChatGPT. They can compare prices, plan purchases, and more, all within a conversational interface. Agentic Payments will enable users to complete transactions without leaving the AI environment.

AI-Driven Commerce

This collaboration leverages Razorpay's expertise in digital finance, NPCI's reliable UPI infrastructure that supports over 20 billion monthly transactions, and OpenAI's advanced AI models. Together, they aim to offer consumers smarter and more intuitive shopping experiences.

Supported by Razorpay's banking partners, Axis Bank and Airtel Payments Bank, the initiative utilises UPI innovations such as UPI Circle and UPI Reserve Pay. It ensures seamless UPI transactions for AI-native shopping experiences. Bigbasket, a Tata enterprise, is among the first merchants enabling customers to shop through AI-powered interactions on ChatGPT.

For instance, a ChatGPT user might request assistance with ordering groceries from BigBasket. The AI agent would check BigBasket's catalogue, present product options, and place the order via Razorpay's payment system upon confirmation. Users maintain control with real-time tracking and instant revocation for a secure shopping experience.

As part of this initiative, Razorpay, NPCI, and OpenAI will explore various AI-based payment use cases. These include personalised and secure AI commerce through conversational shopping and checkout experiences. As noted, this feature is currently in its testing phase, which will be rolled out in the coming days.
