Gemini on Android Auto Can Now Dig Through Your Gmail and Photos While You Drive, Here’s How to Turn It On

Google is making Gemini on Android Auto a lot more personal. The assistant can now pull details from your Gmail, Calendar, Google Photos, Maps, YouTube and Search history to answer questions while you drive. The feature is called Personal Intelligence, and it is rolling out on Android Auto starting today.

What can it do in the car?

Instead of hunting through emails at a red light, you can just ask. Google's examples include asking for your flight gate and whether the flight is on time, and getting both answers in one go. You can also say "take me to my doctor's appointment" without remembering the address, since Gemini picks it up from your calendar.

Photos come into play too. You can ask Gemini to find a car wash from a photo you took last week and navigate there, with no scrolling through your gallery. It also tailors suggestions. If you ask for a restaurant along your route and you're vegetarian, Gemini will shortlist places that suit you.

Is it available in India?

Yes, personal Intelligence is rolling out to personal Google accounts of users aged 18 and above worldwide. The exceptions are the European Economic Area, Switzerland, the UK and Nigeria. Workspace accounts from work or college are not included.

Cars with Google built-in, where the software runs on the car itself instead of your phone, will get the feature in the coming months.

How to turn it on

Personal Intelligence is off by default. If you've already enabled it in the Gemini app on your phone, it carries over to Android Auto automatically. If not, open the Gemini app, go to Settings, tap Personal Intelligence and choose which apps to connect under Connected Apps.

You can switch it off anytime, and Android Auto keeps working as before without it. Navigation, music and calls are unaffected. Gemini's answers just won't be tailored to you.
