Google Is Reworking The Gemini App With A UX 2.0 Overhaul And A New macOS App
Google is finally doing something users have been asking for since Gemini launched. The company is rebuilding the Gemini app’s entire experience, and it’s calling the project UX 2.0. Alongside that, Google has also confirmed that a native macOS version of the app is in development.

Both updates came directly from company executives replying to users on X, which tells you Google knows these complaints are real and not just internet noise.
Gemini’s Interface Has Been A Pain Point For A While
If you’ve used Gemini on your phone or laptop, you’ve probably noticed a pattern. The AI itself is strong, but the app doesn’t always feel like it’s keeping up. People often say ChatGPT feels cleaner and easier to navigate, while Gemini can feel cluttered or a little messy.
Users have been sharing these frustrations openly on X and Reddit. And this time, Google didn’t brush it aside. Logan Kilpatrick from Google DeepMind responded to one of those posts and said the company is making a “huge investment” in fixing the user experience. He confirmed the UX 2.0 project is already underway, which gives us a clear signal that the changes won’t be minor.
Kilpatrick also pointed out something important. This isn’t a basic UI redesign. It’s a full UX rebuild. UI focuses on the visuals and layout, but UX is the entire journey. How you move through the app. How easy it is to find what you need. How the platform guides you from start to finish. That’s a deeper kind of fix.
Some Early Changes Have Already Started Rolling Out
While Google hasn’t shared a release timeline, some Android users have already noticed small but meaningful updates. The homepage feels cleaner. Dark mode uses a deeper background. Action tools like Create Image and Write Anything are easier to find because they’re stacked vertically instead of being tucked away.
There’s also a new My Stuff section that collects everything Gemini has generated for you, including images, long-form content, videos, Canvas projects, and more. It looks like Google is slowly setting up a proper hub inside the app that keeps track of your past work, instead of scattering it around different menus.
A Native macOS App Is Finally Happening
Another big reveal came through Kilpatrick’s reply to a different user. He confirmed that Josh Woodward, a VP at Google, and his team are working on the first-ever Gemini app for macOS.
Right now, Mac users have to open a browser every time they want to use Gemini. It’s fine, but it doesn’t feel integrated. A native app opens up small conveniences that matter in everyday use, like drag-and-drop, quick access from the dock, faster switching while multitasking, and possibly system-level shortcuts.
It also puts Google on the same playing field as OpenAI, which already has a dedicated desktop app for ChatGPT.
Google Is Clearly Trying To Close The Usability Gap
Google isn’t struggling with model performance. Gemini’s AI capabilities are strong. The issue has always been how people interact with it. With competitors like OpenAI and Anthropic refining their apps constantly, Google can’t afford to fall behind on usability.
UX 2.0 and the macOS app feel like Google’s way of saying the experience needs to match the tech underneath. And judging by how openly executives are acknowledging user complaints, the company seems ready to fix what hasn’t been working.
We still don’t know when these updates will land, but the direction is finally clear.
