Google Upgrades AI Overviews with Gemini 3, Lets Users Ask Follow-Up Questions

Google is redefining how we search the web. With Gemini 3 now the default AI model for Overviews, Google Search is becoming more intuitive, conversational, and helpful – right from the results page.

Robby Stein, VP of Product, Google Search, said “the updates aim to provide a more natural way for users to get answers, whether they need quick facts or want to explore complex topics.” This shift places AI assistance at the centre of the search journey, rather than as a separate step.

With the latest update, users can ask anything that's on their mind – no matter how long, detailed, or complex – and get precise, helpful answers instantly. Google has now made Gemini 3 the default AI model for AI Overviews worldwide, ensuring best-in-class responses appear directly on the search results page whenever AI assistance adds value.

To further enhance the experience, Google is also making conversations more seamless than ever. Users can now ask follow-up questions straight from an AI Overview and effortlessly transition into an interactive back-and-forth using AI Mode, turning Search into a truly conversational experience.

One of the biggest highlights of this update is the ability to jump into AI Mode conversations directly from AI Overviews on mobile. This feature is rolling out globally, allowing users to ask follow-up questions and explore topics in depth without leaving Search. This conversational view keeps context from the initial search, helping people refine questions and compare information while staying within the main Google Search experience.
