Google Chrome Integrates Gemini 3.1: AI Side Panel, Nano Banana 2 Editing, and 50+ Languages
Google Chrome now brings Gemini 3.1 directly into the browser for users in India, New Zealand and Canada. The update adds a multitasking side panel, Connected Apps support and over 50 languages. Features include image editing with Nano Banana 2, an auto browse mode for complex tasks, and new security layers built around the Universal Commerce Protocol for safer online actions.
Last year, Google outlined a major Gemini-based revamp for Chrome but kept access limited for many people and languages. Those limits are now gone. The expanded roll-out delivers the same core experience to more regions, while keeping the tools inside the browser. This approach aims to make AI support feel like part of normal web use rather than a separate service.

Side Panel and Multitasking Features
The most visible change for new users is the Gemini side panel in Chrome. A small icon in the top-right corner opens a workspace that sits beside the current tab. You can read a dense article, research paper or contract on the left while Gemini produces summaries or key points on the right. This setup cuts down on constant tab switching and potential "tab fatigue".
Within this side area, Gemini in Chrome also responds to more targeted tasks. It can turn an educational article into a practice quiz or give clear steps to adapt a recipe you find online. Gemini keeps track of earlier pages from the same session as well. You can ask questions about information viewed an hour earlier and close many of those “save for later” tabs.
Connected Apps and Workspace Integration
Chrome now links more closely with Google Workspace through Connected Apps, which lets Gemini in Chrome "talk" to Gmail, Google Calendar, Maps and YouTube. You do not need to leave the tab you are viewing. When reading about a conference, you can ask Gemini to locate the registration mail in Gmail and then scan Calendar for clashes.
Gemini in Chrome can also help write messages based on what appears on your screen. Give a short prompt and it drafts an email that reflects the current page content. You can adjust the text inside the side panel and then send it with one click. This cross-app function turns the browser into a simple control centre for everyday personal and work planning.
Creative Tools, Auto Browse and Security
Nano Banana 2 is now integrated into Gemini in Chrome as an image editing tool. Users can upload an image and describe edits in text, such as adjusting lighting or changing furniture in a room to preview different interior designs.
Advanced users in the United States with Pro or Ultra subscriptions can access auto browse, an agentic feature that performs multi-step tasks. It can compare flights and hotel prices, assist with expense reporting, and track online subscriptions by navigating websites automatically.

Since Gemini in Chrome can interact with shopping sites and send messages, Google has introduced new security safeguards. These include systems designed to detect prompt injection attempts and "confirmation gates" that require user approval before actions such as sending emails, adding calendar events, or completing purchases.
Google is also developing the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) to standardise how AI agents interact with online retailers. The framework aims to create consistent connections between services such as Shopify and Wayfair when AI tools handle transactions inside the browser.
Gemini in Chrome now supports additional languages across African, Asian, and European regions. The expansion includes multiple variants of English, Spanish, Portuguese, and Chinese, as well as Hindi and several other Indian languages.
| Category | Languages |
|---|---|
| African | Afrikaans, Amharic, Swahili |
| South Asian | Bengali, Gujarati, Hindi, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Tamil, Telugu |
| East and Southeast Asian | Filipino, Indonesian, Japanese, Korean, Thai, Vietnamese, Chinese (Simplified and Traditional) |
| European (including UK) | Bulgarian, Catalan, Czech, Danish, German, English (US and UK), Greek, Spanish (Spain and Latin America), Estonian, Basque, Finnish, French, Galician, Croatian, Hungarian, Icelandic, Italian, Lithuanian, Latvian, Dutch, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese (Brazil and Portugal), Romanian, Russian, Slovak, Slovenian, Serbian, Swedish, Turkish, Ukrainian |
| Other | Malay |
As these updates reach India, New Zealand and Canada, Chrome shifts from a basic browser towards a broader daily assistant. Gemini 3.1, Connected Apps, Nano Banana 2, auto browse and UCP work together inside one interface. People gain help with research, planning, communication, images and shopping, while permission checks and security systems keep final control with the user.
