Google Photos Can Now Turn Your Selfies Into Memes: Here's How

Google Photos is getting a new generative AI feature called “Me Meme,” and it’s exactly what it sounds like.

Google Photos Can Now Turn Your Selfies Into Memes

The tool lets users turn their own selfies into meme-style images using templates and AI-generated edits. It’s rolling out as an experimental feature in the U.S., and it’s part of Google’s broader effort to make the Create tab in Photos more interactive and AI-driven.

What “Me Meme” Actually Does

Me Meme sits inside the Create tab in Google Photos on Android and iOS.

To generate a meme, you start by choosing a template. Google offers preset options, or you can upload your own reference image. After that, you select a selfie or portrait photo where your face is clearly visible, ideally well-lit and front-facing.

Once you hit generate, Google’s AI creates a meme-style image based on your face and the selected template. You can save the result to your library, regenerate it, share it, or compare it with the original photo. There’s also an option to send feedback on the generated output.

Why Google Is Pushing AI Inside Photos

Me Meme isn’t arriving in isolation.

It joins a growing list of AI-driven tools inside the Create tab, including Create with AI, Photo to video, Remix, Collage, Highlight video, Cinematic photo, and Animation. Together, they show a clear direction: Google Photos is shifting from being a passive gallery to an active creative platform.

Google’s Gemini app can also generate similar AI content, but Photos offers a more structured experience. Instead of typing prompts from scratch, users are guided through templates and visual inputs, which lowers the barrier to experimentation.

There’s also a branding angle here. “Me Meme” is simple, catchy, and built for sharing. That alone gives it viral potential.

The Catch: Limited Availability and Few Details

Right now, Me Meme is rolling out only in the U.S. as an experimental feature.

Google hasn’t shared a broader rollout timeline or detailed technical information. Even in the U.S., the feature isn’t showing up consistently on devices yet, suggesting a gradual or limited deployment.
