Google Takes Gemini AI Beyond Driving in Maps, Adds Walking and Cycling Support
Back in November, Google integrated Gemini into Google Maps to offer hands-free, multi-step navigation for drivers. Now, the company is expanding its AI-powered assistance beyond driving, bringing Gemini support to walking and cycling navigation as well.
Google confirmed in a recent blog post that Gemini-powered navigation for walking and cycling is rolling out globally on both Android and iOS devices.

With the new update, Gemini can act as a personal walking tour guide while you explore a city. Users can ask contextual questions such as, "OK Google, what neighborhood am I in?" and then say, "What are top-rated restaurants nearby?" Gemini suggests places along the planned route, using Maps’ latest local information. This feature is designed to make walking navigation more interactive and informative, especially for users exploring unfamiliar areas or traveling to new destinations.
Cyclists also benefit from Gemini's hands-free capabilities, allowing them to stay focused on the road. Riders can ask, "What's my ETA?" or "When's my next meeting?" without stopping. Gemini can also handle basic tasks such as sending messages. If delays occur, saying "Text Sarah I'm 10 minutes behind" sends the update automatically, allowing cyclists to maintain grip and focus.
By extending Gemini beyond driving, Google is positioning its AI assistant as a more versatile navigation companion across different modes of travel. The update reflects Google's broader push to integrate AI more deeply into everyday apps, offering contextual, real-time assistance tailored to how people move through the world.
