Google Translate Gets New AI-Powered Features to Better Translate Idioms
Google is rolling out new AI-powered features inside Google Translate that aim to help users strike the right tone in conversations, whether chatting with friends or handling formal meetings, so translations feel more natural and better suited to real situations.
Powered by Gemini's advanced multilingual capabilities, the updated Translate app now offers context-aware alternatives to make translations more natural and accurate. The new feature is particularly useful when dealing with idioms and colloquial phrases, which often lose their meaning in direct translations. So when users translate a phrase like "It's raining cats and dogs," Translate now shows different options and explains which expression fits which context.

Google Translate AI features for nuanced language choices
Users can dive deeper into each suggestion by tapping "understand" for a short explanation of meaning and usage. They can then select "ask" to pose follow-up questions, including how a phrase might sound in a specific country, region or dialect, giving more control over local tone.
The new Google Translate AI features are already live in the U.S. and India on the mobile app for Android and iOS, with a web rollout expected soon.
With this update, Google is positioning Translate as more than just a literal translation tool – transforming it into a smarter communication assistant that understands tone, culture and context. These tools are expected to make both casual chats and professional exchanges clearer by guiding people towards phrasing that fits their audience.
