How Does ChatGPT’s Age Prediction Model Work? What It Means for Users

OpenAI has begun rolling out a new age prediction system on ChatGPT to improve user safety worldwide. The tool aims to judge whether an account is likely used by someone under 18. When the system flags a possible teen user, ChatGPT will apply extra safeguards by default.

Until this launch, ChatGPT mainly depended on the age that users entered while signing up. Accounts that stated the user was under 18 already received added safety features as a standard setting. The new layer helps when the stated age is unclear, missing, or possibly inaccurate.

How the ChatGPT Age Prediction System Works

The age prediction model looks at several signals linked to each account over time. These include how long the account has existed, typical times of use, and changing usage patterns. The model also considers the age that a user has stated during registration.

OpenAI says these combined inputs help the ChatGPT age prediction system estimate if an account is likely run by a minor. The system is expected to improve as it keeps learning from more data. A survey linked with the feature has been completed by some users, who see a note saying the survey is done.

Signal used by ChatGPT age prediction systemWhat it indicates
Account ageHow long the account has been active
Typical times of useWhen the account is usually active
Usage patterns over timeHow behaviour changes or stays steady
Stated user ageAge given during sign-up

Safety Controls within the ChatGPT Age Prediction System

When the ChatGPT age prediction system suggests an account may belong to someone under 18, stronger safety rules apply. These limits aim to reduce access to content that may not suit teens. OpenAI bases these choices on research into child and teen development and behaviour.

Restricted material includes graphic violence and sexual or violent role play. It also covers risky viral challenges, depictions of self-harm, and content pushing extreme beauty standards or unhealthy dieting. Studies cited by OpenAI note that teens differ from adults in risk-taking, impulse control, emotional regulation, and peer influence.

OpenAI accepts that the ChatGPT age prediction system can still make errors. If an adult is placed into the under-18 experience, the user can restore full access. This happens through a simple age confirmation step that uses a selfie via Persona, a secure identity verification service.

The age prediction feature is rolling out globally across ChatGPT products. OpenAI says the European Union will receive access in the coming weeks because of specific regional requirements. The company aims to give teens added protection while letting adults use ChatGPT with fewer limits, under a single consistent safety approach.
