Is ChatGPT-5 Better Than GPT-4o? Users Discontent Over GPT-5's Performance And Model Changes
OpenAI's latest AI model, GPT-5, has not been well-received by many ChatGPT users. Released as a unification of the GPT-series and o-series, it aimed to simplify user experience by eliminating the need for a model picker. However, this change led to the retirement of older models, including GPT-4o, which has sparked dissatisfaction among users.
Many users have expressed their discontent on social media, claiming that GPT-5 does not match up to GPT-4o. A Reddit (Obtained via Gadgets360) user mentioned that the new model's responses lack depth and personality. In an AMA session with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, another user highlighted their reliance on GPT-4o for creative tasks and long-form interactions.

OpenAI's Response to User Feedback
In response to these concerns, Altman assured users that improvements were underway. He later announced on X (formerly Twitter) that Plus subscribers would soon benefit from increased rate limits for GPT-5. Additionally, they would continue to have access to GPT-4o while OpenAI monitors its usage.
The CEO explained that an "autoswitcher" feature was malfunctioning, causing GPT-5 to underperform. This feature is designed to switch capabilities based on query type but was not functioning correctly. Altman believes this contributed to the perception of GPT-5 being less capable.
Financial Challenges and Strategic Decisions
Despite generating billions in revenue last year, OpenAI faced losses amounting to $5 billion. The company's expenses are largely attributed to server maintenance costs. This financial strain may have influenced the decision to retire older models like GPT-4o.
During a CNBC interview post-launch, Altman acknowledged the company's financial losses but remained optimistic about future improvements in AI models. He stated, "As long as we're on this very distinct curve of the model getting better and better, I think the rational thing to do is to just be willing to run the loss for quite a while."
Future Prospects and Adjustments
OpenAI plans adjustments in model-switching processes to ensure users receive appropriate responses more consistently. Altman also mentioned that ChatGPT will now display which model is being used for transparency purposes.
The company finds itself in a challenging position: maintaining older models leads to financial losses while removing them results in user dissatisfaction. Each older model offered unique capabilities that GPT-5 has yet to fully replicate.
OpenAI continues its efforts towards refining its AI offerings despite current setbacks. The company aims for continuous improvement in its models' performance while addressing user concerns and managing operational costs effectively.
