Nothing Introduces Essential AI Platform to Help Users Build Mini Apps Using Prompts: Here’s How It Works
Nothing has introduced Essential, a new AI platform designed to lay the groundwork for a future personal operating system. This platform debuts with two key features: Essential Apps, which lets users craft personalised apps using natural language, and Playground, a community hub for sharing and remixing these creations.
Recently, Nothing secured $200 million in Series C funding to support its strategic shift towards an AI-native platform that seamlessly integrates hardware and software.

Innovative Personal Software Vision
The long-term goal for Essential is to develop into Essential OS, described as a "truly AI-native operating system." This initiative seeks to move away from the current mobile operating systems that are seen as monetising attention rather than enhancing creativity. The initial focus is on Essential Apps, enabling Nothing device users to create applications by simply describing their needs.
Community-Driven App Development
Once created, these apps can be added directly to the user's home screen. Playground serves as a platform for building, sharing, and downloading community-developed apps. Nothing positions Playground as an open alternative to traditional app stores, harnessing user creativity. The company frames this as a shift from mass-market software to personal creation through AI's ability to simplify and reduce software development costs.
Independent Platform Advantage
Nothing emphasises its independence as a platform, having shipped millions of devices and generated over $1 billion in sales. This independence allows it to build an open ecosystem free from incentives that maintain the "status quo." An integrated hardware and software approach is deemed necessary to deliver the personal context required for such an OS.

Essential Space, Search and Memory
Essential Space is available on Nothing and CMF phones for capturing ideas and organising inspirations. Essential Search helps find information quickly. An upcoming feature, Essential Memory, will learn user habits to surface forgotten details at relevant times. The suite is private by design; user data remains on the device unless cloud access is chosen.
Carl Pei, CEO of Nothing, stated: "With Essential, we begin to chip away at the outdated and elitist system set up by the legacy market leaders. A new era requires new thinking. The future of software will be one of unrestricted access, collective innovation, and hyper personalisation. Moats of the past will be dismantled, opening the door to a truly user-led future."
Ultimately, Nothing aims for Essential to foster a more balanced relationship with technology where AI complements user strengths and returns time rather than creating more digital distractions. The alpha version of the platform has already seen hundreds of apps created by community members for specific needs like mental health trackers and family organisers. Essential's Playground is now accessible at playground.nothing.tech.
