OpenAI has expanded the availability of its ChatGPT Projects feature to all users, including those using the free version. Initially launched in December last year for paid subscribers, this feature allows users to create a folder within ChatGPT where they can upload files, images, and add custom instructions. Essentially, it enables the creation of a tailored chatbot for specific purposes.

Projects are powered by the advanced GPT-5 model. Free users can upload up to five files per project, while ChatGPT Plus/Go/Edu subscribers have a limit of 25 files. Pro/Business/Enterprise customers can upload up to 40 files. This flexibility caters to various user needs, from personal health management to academic studies and travel planning.

Enhanced Customisation Options

A notable enhancement is the introduction of Project-only memory within ChatGPT. This means that each project has its own dedicated memory space, separate from the regular ChatGPT memory. This change allows for more efficient management and retrieval of information specific to each project.

Users can further personalise their projects by selecting different colours and custom icons. However, creating scheduled tasks within ChatGPT still requires a subscription. It would be beneficial if OpenAI extended this functionality to free users in the future.
