In another report, a user said they got so caught up in the chat that the bot “felt as real as talking to a friend.” They added that when ChatGPT’s tone would suddenly change or it contradicted itself, it left them “more confused than before.”

People who felt ignored by OpenAI turned to the FTC for real intervention. A good number described strong feelings of attachment to the bot, saying they grew to trust it in ways they usually wouldn’t trust a piece of software. When that trust took a hit—say, with a sudden shift in tone or unhelpful advice—it didn’t just feel like a technical glitch. For some, it genuinely stung.

What Regulators and Experts Are Saying

These stories have pushed regulators to ask tough questions. Lawmakers and mental health pros say AI bots should do better, especially with people feeling fragile or isolated. There’s growing demand for chatbots to spot when a user might need real human help—or even redirect to hotlines in a crisis.

Mental health experts caution that, even when ChatGPT “sounds” supportive, it can miss crucial warning signs. Some say chatbot empathy is just surface-level—friendly responses, but no ability to recognize genuine distress or actual danger.

OpenAI’s Response and Industry Changes

OpenAI, for its part, says it’s listening closely. The company’s rolled out updates focused on mental health cues, and the new ChatGPT is designed to encourage users to take breaks, flag sensitive moments, and even provide mental health resources or hotlines when needed. They’re also tightening controls for teens, adding parental features, and working with mental health professionals as they update their systems.

Of course, critics argue these measures, while positive, can’t actually replace the need for live human support—especially for people in a crisis.
