OpenAI Finds Hidden Recording Device in Office, Employee Arrested After FBI Probe

OpenAI has reported a security incident after reportedly discovering a hidden recording device inside its office. The company, according to reports, says it used its AI models to investigate the device and identify the employee who allegedly planted it. The matter was then referred to the FBI, which has since then made an arrest. OpenAI has also said it has found no evidence that the employee accessed or stole its sensitive technology or customer information. The investigation is still underway. Read on to know all that we know so far.

What happened at OpenAI's office?

According to a report in ANI, OpenAI discovered a sophisticated recording device hidden inside its executive conference room. It then used its AI models to examine the device and trace its origin. The investigation reportedly helped the company identify an employee who had allegedly planted it a few days earlier.

OpenAI said it terminated the employee and referred the case to the FBI. The company has also stated that it has found no evidence that the individual accessed or took its AI model weights, source code or customer data.

Model weights are the internal numerical values that help an AI model generate responses. These are important parts of how AI systems work, making their protection a key concern for companies such as OpenAI.

The company, in a post on X, said its security measures are designed to protect against threats ranging from insider risks and cybercriminals to nation-state actors. It has also confirmed that it will continue to support the FBI as the investigation moves forward.

“We used our models to understand the device and where it had come from, identifying that a specific employee had planted it a few days earlier,” the company’s post on X reads.

FBI arrests Saudi OpenAI employee over alleged recording device

According to a report by CNBC, citing the US Department of Justice, the FBI arrested Abdulrahman Alfozan, a 35-year-old Saudi national, on October 9 in connection with the incident. The arrest was announced by the department on October 13.

FBI Director Kash Patel said that Alfozan allegedly concealed the recording device inside the executive conference room to capture sensitive discussions about OpenAI's advanced AI technology.

The Department of Justice reportedly said Alfozan was not authorised to enter the room. Security footage allegedly showed him near the conference room on several days before the device was discovered. Investigators also found a bag linked to him inside the building, which reportedly contained his identification and another similar recording device.

The department further alleged that a chatbot account associated with Alfozan's spouse was used to seek information about continuous audio recording and Wi-Fi access. The prompts reportedly covered building, installing, testing and remotely accessing a recording device.

However, these are still allegations for now and the investigation is ongoing. OpenAI has also maintained that it has found no evidence of its sensitive technology or customer data being stolen.
