OpenAI is starting to show advertisements to some ChatGPT users in the U.S., including people on the Free tier and those on the low-cost Go subscription. The company says these ads will appear in tests first. Users on higher-priced plans will stay ad-free, keeping a split between paid and budget options.

The Go plan, launched worldwide in mid-January, costs $8 per month in the U.S. and targets users who want more than the Free tier but do not need Business or Enterprise tools. OpenAI says Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Education subscribers will not see any ads under the current policy.

Our goal is for ads to support broader access to more powerful ChatGPT features while maintaining the trust people place in ChatGPT for important and personal tasks."

Despite those assurances, the idea of ChatGPT ads has already triggered criticism. Many users previously pushed back when OpenAI experimented with app suggestions that looked like unwanted promotions late last year. Those trials fuelled fears that generative AI assistants might gradually shift towards more commercial responses.

During current tests, OpenAI is matching ChatGPT ads to topics users explore, previous chats, and earlier ad interactions. OpenAI adds that advertisers will not receive personal user data. Instead, they get only grouped statistics, such as how many times an advert was seen or clicked. Users can review their ChatGPT ad interaction history, erase it whenever they want, and manage personalisation tools to limit how targeting works.
