Scammers have found a new tool to play with, and it’s Google’s Nano Banana image model. What started as a way to create sharp, realistic visuals is now being twisted to produce fake PAN cards, Aadhaar cards, and other doctored images that look convincing at first glance.

This came into focus after Bengaluru-based techies shared how easily Nano Banana could generate believable identity documents using simple prompts. The scary part isn’t just how real they look. It’s how quickly someone could pass them off in situations where speed matters.
How This Is Showing Up On The Ground
This isn’t staying online. Delivery scams are already being reported where fake verification photos or AI-generated IDs are used to trick delivery partners into handing over prepaid orders. Platforms like Zomato and Swiggy have alerted riders about such tactics, especially in large cities.
Most of these interactions happen fast. A photo is shown. A quick nod follows. And the order is gone.
That reliance on visual confirmation is exactly what makes this method effective.
Why Visual Checks Aren’t Enough Anymore
India does have systems for digital verification through QR codes and official databases. But in day-to-day situations, ID checks often come down to a glance. If it looks real, it passes.
Cybersecurity experts have been clear about this. When AI can mimic fonts, layouts, and safety elements with near precision, surface-level inspection just doesn’t cut it anymore.
Google’s watermarking system, SynthID, is designed to tag AI-generated images. But it only helps if someone actively scans the image using supported tools, which almost never happens in everyday scenarios.
How To Spot AI-Generated IDs And Images
Here are some practical things to watch for if you’re trying to judge whether an image or document might be AI-generated:
- Uneven or shaky text edges, especially around names and numbers
- Slight misalignment of logos, ID photos, or text blocks
- Fonts that look similar but don’t perfectly match official formats
- Overly smooth skin textures on faces, almost plastic-like
- Asymmetry in eyes, eyebrows, or facial proportions
- Strange lighting or shadows that don’t match the environment
- Backgrounds that feel poorly blended or illogical
- Distorted hands or fingers if they appear in the image
- QR codes that fail to scan or redirect oddly
- Tiny details like seals or holograms that appear vague or inconsistent
And when there’s doubt, the safest move is to verify details through official portals instead of trusting what you see on screen.
A Growing Problem That Needs Better Awareness
The Nano Banana issue isn’t just about one AI model. It’s a sign of where image generation is heading. As tools become more realistic and accessible, spotting fake content will only get harder.
That means stronger verification practices, better platform safeguards, and more public awareness will need to work together. Visual trust alone won’t be enough anymore.
