Siri Privacy Upgrade Incoming? Apple Reportedly Testing Auto Chat Deletion with iOS 27

Apple is planning a major Siri overhaul that focuses on privacy, with a feature to auto-delete chat histories between users and the voice assistant. According to a Bloomberg report, the update could let people remove Siri conversations after 30 days or one year, or keep them stored indefinitely if preferred.

The new controls are expected to appear as part of Apple's wider artificial intelligence strategy, which Apple is likely to highlight at the Worldwide Developers Conference in June 2026. The company has been expanding Apple Intelligence features and wants Siri to handle more complex tasks while reducing how long personal interaction data is kept.

Apple's evolving AI Partnerships

Apple announced a partnership with OpenAI during WWDC 2024, when ChatGPT support was added to Siri and several Apple Intelligence tools. The arrangement allowed Siri to forward certain questions to ChatGPT and let iPhone users buy ChatGPT subscriptions through Apple's payment system and broader ecosystem.

Bloomberg reported earlier this month that OpenAI is preparing legal action against Apple, arguing that the two-year AI partnership has broken down. OpenAI reportedly believes it did not gain the commercial and strategic advantages it expected from the deal that put ChatGPT access directly on Apple devices through Siri integration.

Siri Overhaul Privacy and Apple-OpenAI Tensions

At the same time, Apple has been examining deeper integration with Google's Gemini model for future versions of Siri. This potential shift towards Gemini for more tasks has reportedly caused frustration within OpenAI, which had anticipated that ChatGPT would be more widely embedded across Apple's products and services over the coming years.

Unlike some rivals, Apple appears keen to present Siri as a more privacy-conscious assistant, using features like automatic chat deletion as proof. Reports suggest Apple executives will emphasise privacy as a central selling point when the company outlines its next wave of AI features and the Siri overhaul at upcoming events.
