StepFun Just Beat OpenAI to the Punch With the World's First Agentic AI Phone

Chinese AI company StepFun has unveiled the StepX Neo, which it's calling the world's first mass-market agentic smartphone. Founded in 2023 by former Microsoft executives, StepFun is positioning this as its first consumer hardware product, and it's built around a concept that's different from how most AI phones work today.

What Makes It an Agentic Phone

Most phones with AI features use a chatbot that answers questions or helps with individual tasks. The StepX Neo takes a different approach. Its built-in AI assistant, called Step Amoo, is integrated directly into the operating system rather than running as a separate app. The idea is that it can execute multi-step tasks across different apps, system functions, and web services using simple natural language commands, without you having to manually switch between apps at each step.

The example StepFun gives is trip planning. You ask the phone to plan a trip, and the AI agent searches for flights, recommends accommodation, completes bookings, organises the travel details, and saves the itinerary, all on its own. The company also says the assistant learns user preferences over time, though how well that works in practice remains to be seen.

The Operating System Behind It

The StepX Neo doesn't run standard Android. It runs Step AOS, a custom operating system that StepFun says was rebuilt from the ground up using Android, Linux, and RTOS components, rather than simply adding AI features on top of Android.

The OS uses what the company calls an "atomic capability engine," which breaks down device functions into communication, apps, files, and system tools using the MCP standard. This is what allows the AI agent to combine multiple functions and complete a task autonomously without needing manual input at each step.

The natural user interface combines voice and visual inputs and learns user behaviour over time. All AI processing happens on-device through StepFun's proprietary Step Edge foundation model, which the company claims outperforms competing edge AI models across 29 benchmark tests. StepFun hasn't disclosed which benchmarks were used to verify that claim.

Travel and Translation Features

For travellers, the StepX Neo includes live translation across 32 languages and regional dialects, covering phone calls, text messages, and text captured through the camera viewfinder. Beyond translation, it can pull up local transit schedules, recommend nearby attractions, access saved itineraries offline, send flight check-in reminders, flag visa requirements, and assist with customs documentation.

Third-Party App Integrations

StepFun has partnered with several major Chinese platforms to extend what the AI agent can do beyond the phone itself. Confirmed integrations include Ctrip, Alipay, Didi, Meituan, WPS Office, and CapCut. This means the agent can interact with bookings, payments, ride-hailing, and productivity tools directly.

No global availability, pricing, or hardware specifications were shared at launch. The StepX Neo appears to be targeting the Chinese market first, with no confirmed international rollout yet.
