Stop Googling! Here's How to Use ChatGPT to Plan Your Next Trip

Summer travel season is here, and if you're still planning trips the old way, jumping between ten tabs, saving Instagram reels you'll never find again, and copy-pasting visa requirements into Notes, there's a faster way to do most of this.

ChatGPT won't book your flights or replace a good local guide, but it's genuinely useful for the parts of travel planning that eat up the most time. Here's how to actually use it, with prompts you can copy and adapt.

Stop Googling! Here's How to Use ChatGPT to Plan Your Next Trip

Try this prompt:

"Plan a 7-day trip to Tokyo and Kyoto for a family of four. We have two kids aged 6 and 9, and one elderly parent who can't walk long distances. Our budget is around Rs 3 lakh for the whole trip excluding flights. We want a mix of cultural sights and things the kids will enjoy. We prefer to start days slowly and avoid very early morning schedules."

From there you can ask follow-up questions to refine. "Can you replace Day 3 with something closer to the hotel?" or "Which of these can we skip if we're running low on time?" works better as a conversation than as a single prompt.

Use It to Find Food That Actually Matches What You Want

"Best restaurants in Osaka" will get you a list that looks like every other list online. The more useful version is asking for something specific to your situation.

Try these prompts:

"I'm in Osaka for two days and I want to try local street food that isn't in every tourist guide. I'm vegetarian and my budget per meal is around 1,500 yen. Which neighbourhoods should I focus on?"

"I have a reservation at a traditional kaiseki restaurant in Kyoto. Can you explain what a kaiseki meal involves, what the courses typically look like, and anything I should know about etiquette before I go?"

"We're in Istanbul and the menu at this restaurant is entirely in Turkish. Here are the dish names: [paste names]. Can you tell me what each one is, whether it contains meat, and which ones are popular with locals?"

The last one is genuinely useful when you're already at the table and don't have time to Google everything individually.

Prepare for Cultural Context, Not Just Phrases

Most people look up a few words in the local language and call it preparation. What's harder to find is the context around those words: when to use them, what's considered rude, and where tourists most commonly get things wrong.

Try these prompts:

"I'm visiting Japan for the first time. Beyond basic phrases, what are the cultural norms I should know about? Things like behaviour on public transport, at temples, in restaurants, and when meeting people for the first time."

"I'm travelling to Turkey and want to visit a mosque. What should I know before going in, what should I wear, and are there things I should avoid doing inside?"

"Give me 10 practical phrases in Japanese for a tourist, but also tell me the right context for using each one and any common mistakes to avoid."

The goal here isn't to memorise a script. It's to go in knowing enough that you're not accidentally being rude or missing something obvious.

Make Sense of Visa and Documentation Requirements

This is one of the most stressful parts of international travel and also one of the easiest to use ChatGPT for, as long as you treat it as a starting point rather than a definitive source. Always verify visa requirements directly with the official embassy or consulate website before you apply.

What ChatGPT is good for here is helping you understand what you're looking at and what questions to ask.

Try these prompts:

"I'm an Indian passport holder planning to visit Japan for 10 days as a tourist. What are the general visa requirements, what documents are typically needed, and how far in advance should I apply?"

"I'm travelling to Europe with my spouse and two kids. Can you give me a checklist of documents I should carry for the family, including what's typically needed at immigration for children travelling with both parents?"

"Can you explain the difference between a single entry and multiple entry Schengen visa, and which one makes more sense if I'm visiting France and then Spain on the same trip?"

Once you have a general picture, go verify the specifics on the official source. ChatGPT gives you the framework, the embassy website gives you the final word.

Use It When Things Go Wrong Mid-Trip

This is where ChatGPT becomes something different from a planning tool. When plans fall apart in real time, having something that can help you think through options quickly is genuinely useful.

Try these prompts:

"My connecting flight in Dubai got cancelled and I have 9 hours before the next available flight. I have an Indian passport. Can I get a transit visa to leave the airport, and what are my options for spending the time?"

"I need to tell a taxi driver in Tokyo to take me to this address and wait for me for about 20 minutes. Can you give me the Japanese phrase for this and write it in both romaji and Japanese script so I can show them my phone?"

"My hotel in Bali lost my reservation and says they're fully booked. What should I do right now, what are my rights as a guest, and how do I find alternative accommodation quickly in the same area?"

The key is to give it as much context as possible. The more it knows about your situation, the more useful the response.
