What is ‘Vibe Working’? Microsoft’s New AI-Powered Agent Mode and Office Agent for 365 Copilot

Microsoft is introducing a new feature called Agent Mode in its Office applications, specifically Excel and Word. This innovation allows users to generate complex spreadsheets and documents using simple prompts. The feature is part of Microsoft 365 Copilot and is powered by Anthropic models. It aims to simplify tasks that typically require expert knowledge.

Agent Mode in Excel enhances the existing Copilot experience by making intricate spreadsheet functions more accessible. According to Sumit Chauhan, corporate vice president of Microsoft's Office Product Group, "It's not just simple assistive short answers, but board-ready presentations or documents." The feature breaks down complex tasks into manageable steps using OpenAI's GPT-5 model.

Enhancing Productivity with AI

The new Office Agent in Copilot chat can create PowerPoint presentations and Word documents from a chat prompt. This tool is designed to improve productivity by offering structured PowerPoint decks and conducting web-based research simultaneously. Chauhan notes that while AI has struggled with slide creation in the past, "Office Agent changes that."

Agent Mode in Word goes beyond basic writing features by turning document creation into an interactive experience. It allows Copilot to draft content, suggest improvements, and clarify necessary elements during the process. Chauhan explains that this makes writing feel more like a dialogue than a task.

Accuracy and Availability

In terms of accuracy, Microsoft's Agent Mode in Excel achieves a 57.2 percent success rate on SpreadsheetBench, surpassing other AI models like Shortcut.ai and ChatGPT agent with .xlsx support. However, it still falls short of human accuracy at 71.3 percent. The feature is currently available only on web versions but will soon be supported on desktop applications.

The introduction of Office Agent also marks another step for Anthropic AI models within Microsoft 365 apps and services. These models are already used in GitHub Copilot and Copilot Studio, enhancing their ability to produce Word and PowerPoint documents from Microsoft's own Copilot chat interface.

Future Prospects

Microsoft remains committed to OpenAI while exploring other model families to understand their strengths better. Chauhan states, "We are looking at the entire family of models, wherever cutting edge work happens." This exploration aims to build the best composition for Microsoft products.

The new features are available today for Microsoft 365 Copilot customers or Microsoft 365 Personal / Family subscribers through the Frontier program in the US. While OpenAI continues to power Microsoft's AI initiatives within Office apps, Anthropic's models are becoming increasingly integral to applications like Word, PowerPoint, and Excel.

"Productivity is our DNA," says Chauhan. "While others will try to replicate us, there is no substitute for the real thing." With these advancements, Microsoft aims to maintain its edge over other AI tools attempting similar functionalities.
