Will Anthropic's Claude Replace Your Lawyer? Here's What Claude's New Legal Plugins Can Do

Artificial intelligence is rapidly changing the legal industry, and Anthropic's latest update for Claude is adding fuel to the debate over whether AI could eventually replace parts of traditional legal work. The company has introduced a new suite of legal plugins designed to help lawyers, law firms, and corporate legal teams automate research, contract review, drafting, and other time-consuming tasks.

The new tools expand on Anthropic's earlier "Claude for Legal" initiative launched in February 2026, which already caused major disruption across the legal technology sector. Following that announcement, shares of companies such as Thomson Reuters, Pearson, and Relx, the parent company of LexisNexis, dropped sharply as investors worried that AI could threaten traditional legal software businesses.

Anthropic Expands Claude Into Legal Services

What Can Claude's Legal Plugins Do?

Anthropic says Claude can now assist with legal research, document search and review, deposition preparation, contract drafting, and compliance related work. The company has also added specialised "roles" within Claude, including commercial counsel, litigation associate, employment counsel, and even a law student mode. These tools are designed to support work involving corporate law, privacy, employment, AI governance, and commercial agreements.

One of the more practical additions is a vendor agreement reviewer plugin that automatically compares supplier contracts against a company's preferred legal templates and suggests changes. Another feature, called the NDA triager, sorts non-disclosure agreements into risk categories, allowing low risk documents to move ahead while flagging more complex agreements for lawyer review.

Integration With Existing Legal Platforms

Anthropic is also trying to make Claude fit directly into existing legal workflows. The company has introduced integrations with platforms such as DocuSign, Everlaw, Box, and Thomson Reuters' legal research systems. Interestingly, Claude can even connect with Harvey, one of the fastest growing AI legal startups and technically a competitor in the legal AI space.

Legal AI Funding Race Intensifies

The timing is important because the legal AI market is currently booming. In March 2026, Harvey raised $200 million at an $11 billion valuation, while legal AI startup Legora secured $600 million in funding a month later. Investors clearly believe AI powered legal tools will become a major part of the profession in the coming years.

However, that does not necessarily mean lawyers are disappearing anytime soon.

Can AI Really Replace Lawyers?

AI tools like Claude are highly effective at handling repetitive, document heavy work that traditionally consumes hours of billable time. Tasks such as reviewing contracts, summarising case law, organising evidence, and drafting standard legal documents can now be completed far faster with AI assistance. For law firms under pressure to reduce costs and improve efficiency, these tools are becoming increasingly attractive.

At the same time, courts and regulators remain cautious. Several lawyers worldwide have already faced penalties after submitting AI generated filings containing fabricated citations or inaccurate legal arguments. In one high profile case in California during 2025, an attorney was fined after using ChatGPT to prepare an appeal filled with invented quotes and errors. These incidents highlight why human oversight is still critical in legal practice.

Claude as a Legal Assistant, not a Replacement

Anthropic itself does not position Claude as a replacement for qualified lawyers. Instead, the company appears focused on turning Claude into a powerful assistant that can reduce administrative workload and speed up legal operations.

For now, Claude's legal plugins may not replace your lawyer, but they could significantly change how lawyers work soon.
