Asus Low Cost 7 Inch Android Jelly Bean Tablet Coming to India Soon: Can Wicked Leak Compete with the Nexus 7 Creator?

After unveiling the Nexus 7 tablet with the Google branding, which has hit the Indian market today for a price of Rs 19,999, Asus seems to be planning to step into the low cost Android tablet market in the country.

According to a recent The Mobile Indian report, Asus is all set to target the low cost 7 inch Android tablet market with a new tablet, which will be released in a couple months.

The report quotes Alex Huang, managing director, system business group, Asus India stating,

"Asus will launch a sub Rs 15,000 Android Jelly Bean based 7 inch tablet for India in January. Till now we didn't have a tablet catering to the entry level buyers in the country, which is quite a huge market, but with the launch of 7 inch tab in January, Asus will address this issue."

However, he did not disclose any other information regarding the specification of the upcoming Android Jelly Bean tablet.

According to several reports in the past, Asus is looking forward to expand operations in India by increasing 10% in the tablet and laptop market share. Moreover, the company has already secured 7% of the market share in this segment and hence, it can achieve its target by making some advancements in with the Windows and Android OS.

On Wednesday, the Taiwanese PC manufacturer launched a couple of Windows tablets including Vivo Tab RT and Taichi – a netbook-tablet hybrid. Both the devices run on Windows RT OS and are priced at Rs 61,999 and Rs 1,39,999 receptively and they will be made available from December.

Competition

The 7 inch tablet segment is already flooded with several tablets, but, when speaking of devices based on Jelly Bean, Wicked Leak – a local tech manufacturer released a couple of Android Jelly Bean tablets dubbed as Wammy Desire and Wammy Athena in October.

While Asus is reportedly planning to launch a Jelly Bean tablet of 7 inch display in the sub Rs 15,000 price point, Wicked Leak has managed to release the 7 inch offering at Rs 6,499 and the 9.7 inch tablet at Rs 13,999 respectively.

Coming to the specs, Wammy Desire houses a 7 inch capacitive 5 point touchscreen display with 800 x 480 pixel resolution, 1.5GHz dual core ARM Cortex A9 processor, 400 Mali Core GPU, 0.3MP VGA front camera, 8GB internal storage, 1GB RAM, a micro SD card slot for expandable memory support, Wi-Fi, 3G through dongle and a 3,000 mAh Li-ion battery offering up to 6 hours backup.

Wammy Athena packs a 9.7 inch IPS capacitive 10 point touchscreen display with 1024 x 768 pixel resolution, 1.5GHz dual core ARM Cortex A9 processor, 400 Mali Core GPU, 2MP rear camera, 2MP front camera, 16GB internal storage, 1GB RAM, micro SD card slot Wi-Fi, 3G through dongle and a 8,000 mAh Li-ion battery offering up to 6 hours backup.

Spec-wise, Wammy tablet lineup looks decent enough to take on the competition with the upcoming Asus Jelly Bean budget tablet, but the Mumbased based tech firm will have a tough time to secure market sales fiugures against the creator of Nexus 7 – which has already gained titles like 'Gadget of The Year' and the highest selling tablet in 2012.
