Apple plans big for 2019; new Mac Pro in the offing
Apple executives hint that a new Mac Pro is in works.
Apple last updated its desktop PC substantially in December 2013. And it still won't see an upgrade this year. But what's exciting is that according to senior executives, the company will be bringing a new Mac Pro in 2019.
"We want to be transparent and communicate openly with our pro community so we want them to know that the Mac Pro is a 2019 product. It's not something for this year," Mac hardware product marketing director Tom Boger told TechCrunch.
There isn't much about the new Mac Pro is known as of now, but Apple's Phil Schiller last year said in an interview that the device would be far more flexible, upgradable and modular compared to the current generation.
Apple also told TechCrunch that it has created a new Pro Workflow Team that has artists and filmmakers who are working directly with its engineering group to refine and shape what the new Macs will be capable of.
"We're getting a much, much, much deeper understanding of our pro customers and their workflows and really understanding not only where the state of the art is today, but where the state of the art is going, and all of that is really informing the work that we're doing on the Mac Pro," said Apple VP of Hardware Engineering John Ternus.
It seems Apple, in order to gain more users, has been trying to be more flexible in terms of functionality as well. The company recently also rolled out the support for external GPUs with the latest update to macOS High Sierra.
Now users will be able to connect different graphics card to the Mac using a Thunderbolt 3 port and make use of the additional power to speed up high-end processes such as gaming and video editing. The company specifically highlights its use for virtual reality.
Although, external GPU isn't something new, for Apple's walled garden this might be welcomed change. However, there are few restrictions on what you can do with the external GPUs. First being, only a few models are officially supported. Also, the company is only supporting some of AMD's Radeon GPUs.
