Is Your Taxi Fare Too High? Bengaluru Tech Expert Exposes "Blumeter" Scam and How You Can Avoid It

A new scam targeting travelers in Bengaluru has come to light thanks to tech expert Mahesh Suthar, who shared his experience on social media. The scam involves taxi drivers using a fake app called "Blumeter," which closely mimics the interface of popular ride-hailing apps like Uber.

This counterfeit app is being used to overcharge unsuspecting passengers by displaying inflated fares.

Bengaluru Tech Expert Uncovers Fake Taxi App Scam: How to Stay Alert

The Scam: How It Works

Suthar's ordeal began at Bengaluru airport when he hailed a taxi. The driver, appearing to operate a legitimate ride-hailing app, used Blumeter to simulate the trip. Upon arrival at his destination, Suthar noticed that the fare was ₹1,000 higher than expected. When questioned, the driver attributed the excess charge to GST but failed to provide a receipt, claiming it would be sent via email later-a dubious claim, as no contact information had been exchanged.

Describing his experience on social media, Suthar explained how the scam works:

  • The counterfeit app, Blumeter, is designed to replicate the interface of genuine ride-hailing apps, complete with start and stop trip buttons.
  • The app generates inflated fares, which appear credible to passengers unaware of the scam.
  • When asked for receipts, drivers cite "technical issues" or delayed billing as excuses to avoid issuing proof of the transaction.

Exposing the Scam on Social Media

Suthar took to social media to warn others. In his detailed post, he described the incident humorously but with a serious underlying message:

"What an inventive new scam by @BLRAirport taxi today 😂 This dude showed me an exact replica of @Uber app when he started and ended the trip with 1000 bucks extra baked in. Said the extra is because of GST and when I asked for the bill he said I'll get it next month. So cute."

His experience has resonated with many, shedding light on the growing sophistication of scams targeting travelers.

How to Protect Yourself from Taxi Scams

Travelers can take proactive steps to avoid falling victim to such schemes:

  • Stick to Verified Apps: Always book rides through trusted platforms like Uber or Ola, as they provide verified fare estimates and secure payment methods.
  • Double-Check the Fare: Before starting a trip, compare the estimated fare in the app with the driver's claim.
  • Request a Receipt: Always insist on receiving a physical or digital receipt upon completing your trip. Avoid paying if the driver cannot provide one.
  • Report Irregularities: Any suspicious behavior or irregular fare charges should be reported to airport authorities or the ride-hailing service immediately.
  • Use GPS Tracking: Keep your GPS or maps active to ensure the route aligns with the driver's navigation, avoiding unnecessary detours.

While authorities work to crack down on such incidents, passengers must remain cautious and take preventive measures. By staying vigilant and following these guidelines, travelers can ensure a fair and safe journey, minimizing the risk of falling prey to deceptive practices like the one exposed by Mahesh Suthar.
