What Is Brave Origin? The No-Frills, No-Crypto, No-AI Version of Brave Explained

You've probably used or at least heard of Brave, the browser that blocks ads and trackers by default. It's free, it's fast, and over the years it's picked up a lot of extra features alongside the core privacy stuff. For a lot of Brave users, that's also a list of things they were already ignoring or turning off manually. Origin just makes that the starting point instead of something you have to configure yourself.

How Much Does It Cost

It's a one-time purchase of $59.99, and that license works across up to 10 devices. No subscription, no annual fee.

Linux users get it free, though they can pay if they want to support the project.

The regular Brave browser isn't going anywhere. It stays free and fully supported for anyone who wants the full feature set or just doesn't want to pay.

Who Is Brave Origin Actually For

If you've ever set up Brave on a new device and immediately spent time turning off Rewards, hiding the Leo button, clearing out the home screen, and disabling the news feed, this is built for you. It's for people who want the privacy layer without having to manage everything around it every single time.

It's also worth understanding what you're opting out of when you use free Brave. The free version is sustained by those extras: the AI, the VPN, the crypto features, and the rewards program all support Brave as a business through subscriptions, partnerships, and privacy-first advertising. Origin is just a different arrangement where you pay once upfront instead.

If you're switching from Chrome and you've never used Brave before, the free version will likely cover what you need. Origin makes the most sense for existing Brave users who want a cleaner setup from the start.

How to Set It Up on Desktop

On desktop, you can either download Origin as a standalone app or upgrade your existing Brave installation.

As a standalone app:

Download Brave Origin for your desktop and run the installer. When you open it, you'll be asked to verify an existing purchase or buy through the Brave Premium account site. Once you've paid, save the Purchase ID, enter it in the app, and follow the onboarding steps.

Linux users get a "Proceed with Origin for free on Linux" button at this screen instead.

Upgrading your existing Brave:

Go to Settings, then System, and scroll down to Brave Origin. Click Buy Now if you haven't purchased yet, complete the payment on the Brave Premium site, and save your Purchase ID. Restart Brave, go back into Settings and click Brave Origin, and you'll find a panel where you can toggle each removed feature individually.

How to Set It Up on Mobile

On mobile, Origin only works as an upgrade to your existing Brave app. There's no separate standalone download on Android or iOS.

On Android, tap the three-dot menu, go to All Settings, scroll to General, and tap Origin. Tap Buy Now and you'll be taken to the Play Store to complete the purchase. On iOS the flow is the same but routes you to the App Store instead. After buying, restart the app, go back to Settings, tap Origin, and the feature toggle panel will be there.

iOS support is expected within one to two weeks of launch, so it should arrive sometime around June 11 to June 18.

Is It Worth Getting

If you're an existing Brave user who's been through the manual setup process more than a few times, the one-time fee starts to make sense. Ten devices, no subscription, clean out of the box.

If you're happy with free Brave and don't mind the occasional settings adjustment, there's no real pressure to switch. Nothing about the free version is changing.
