CES 2025 | AMD Expands Ryzen 9000HX Lineup, Debuts AI Max, Z2 Extreme CPUs, and Radeon 9000 GPUs

With updates across its Ryzen CPU series, Radeon graphics cards, and AI-driven processors, AMD is positioning itself to compete aggressively in a rapidly evolving market.

Ryzen Processors for Gamers and Creators

AMD's gaming announcements featured two flagship desktop CPUs: the Ryzen 9 9950X3D and Ryzen 9 9900X3D. These processors build on AMD's 3D V-cache technology, which enhances gaming performance by significantly increasing cache sizes. According to AMD, the 9950X3D is 8% faster on average than its predecessor, the 7950X3D, and offers a 20% performance boost over Intel's Core Ultra 9 285K in gaming benchmarks.

For users who don't require the additional cores of the 9950X3D, AMD highlighted the Ryzen 9800X3D as a more cost-effective option for gaming, offering comparable performance without the added overhead suited for productivity tasks.

In the handheld gaming segment, AMD launched the Ryzen Z2 Series, designed for compact devices like the ASUS ROG Ally and Lenovo Legion Go. The top-tier Ryzen Z2 Extreme features 8 Zen 5 cores and RDNA 3.5 graphics with 16 compute units, delivering high-end performance for portable gaming. Meanwhile, the entry-level Ryzen Z2 Go, with older Zen 3+ cores and RDNA 2 graphics, provides a more affordable option with moderate performance for casual gaming needs.

Gaming laptops also received attention with the Ryzen 9000HX Series, including the Ryzen 9 9955HX3D. This 16-core processor, equipped with 3D V-cache, is optimized for thermal efficiency and battery life, making it well-suited for high-performance gaming laptops.

AI-Driven Advancements in Computing

AI was a major focus of AMD's CES announcements. The Ryzen AI Max Series processors are designed for premium laptops targeting creators and advanced users. These chips feature up to 16 Zen 5 cores, 40 RDNA 3.5 graphics compute units, and a neural processing unit (NPU) capable of 50 trillion operations per second (TOPS). AMD highlighted use cases such as real-time translation, dynamic video enhancements, and productivity features like Microsoft Copilot+, which leverage the processor's AI capabilities.

For mainstream users, AMD introduced the Ryzen AI 300 Series, featuring the AI 7 350 and AI 5 340 processors. These models offer a balance of performance and affordability while retaining up to 50 TOPS for AI-driven applications. Entry-level options like the Ryzen 200 Series also bring AI capabilities, though limited to 16 TOPS, which AMD positions as suitable for basic AI tasks and everyday productivity.

Radeon RDNA 4 Graphics and Next-Gen Upscaling

AMD teased its upcoming Radeon 9000 Series GPUs, which include the Radeon 9070XT and Radeon 9070, slated for launch in Q1 2025. These graphics cards are designed to compete directly with NVIDIA's RTX 5070 series and promise improved power efficiency alongside enhanced gaming performance.

Complementing its GPU announcements, AMD revealed FSR4 (FidelityFX Super Resolution 4), its latest image upscaling technology. Powered by machine learning, FSR4 is designed to deliver sharper visuals and smoother gameplay on systems equipped with RDNA 4 GPUs. AMD positioned FSR4 as a significant step forward in maintaining high frame rates without compromising visual quality.

Enterprise Solutions with AI Integration

AMD expanded its enterprise offerings with the introduction of Ryzen AI PRO Series processors, developed in collaboration with Dell. These chips combine CPU, GPU, and AI capabilities, enabling features such as live transcription, real-time translation, and advanced security for professionals.

The Dell partnership also brings AMD's Threadripper PRO and EPYC processors to new enterprise systems designed for workloads like data analysis, machine learning, and intensive 3D rendering. These systems aim to provide businesses with the computing power needed to handle complex workflows while maintaining energy efficiency and scalability.

At CES 2025, AMD made it clear that it's aiming to meet the diverse needs of gamers, content creators, and professionals alike.
