E-Passport Explained: What Is It, How To Apply And Check Benefits
From everyday home essentials to digital identity systems, everything around us is getting smarter. Now, your passport is getting smarter too. In a significant advancement towards strengthening security, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has officially launched the e-Passport. This initiative is part of the Passport Seva Programme (PSP) Version 2.0, which was announced on April 1, 2024.
The e-Passport aims to enhance the security, convenience, and efficiency of Indian citizens. In this story, we take a deep dive into everything you need to know about the new e-Passport.

What Is an E-Passport?
The e-Passport, a blend of traditional paper passport and advanced electronic features, incorporates a Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) Chip and an antenna. These components are embedded as an inlay of the passport that contains the personal particulars and biometric information of the passport holder. The e-Passport will be visually identifiable as a small additional gold colour symbol printed below the word "Passport" on the front cover.
Benefits of an E-Passport
- The e-Passport ensures a higher level of data protection by storing information both in printed form and as a digitally signed record within the embedded chip. This dual-layer approach helps preserve the integrity of the passport holder's personal and biometric data.
- An e-Passport significantly reduces the risk of counterfeiting, tampering, and identity theft.
- The e-Passport helps streamline immigration procedures, reduce wait times, and enhance the accuracy of security checks, benefiting both travellers and border authorities.
- The core of the e-Passport security is built on Public Key Infrastructure (PKI), which validates the authenticity of the chip's data, confirming its origin and ensuring it hasn't been altered or compromised.
How Does It Differ From a Traditional Passport?
An e-Passport features a small gold chip symbol on the front cover, while a traditional Passport does not have this symbol. The former contains a Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) chip embedded in the passport's cover or data page, which contains personal data, digital photograph, and biometric information, while the traditional Passport only includes printed personal information and a photograph.
Moreover, the ePassport supports automated gates and ePassport readers at immigration checkpoints, speeding up entry and exit processes, while the traditional Passport requires manual inspection, leading to longer processing times.

Where Can I Get an e-Passport?
Currently, Regional Passport Offices in the following cities are authorized to issue e-passports to Indian citizens:
- Nagpur
- Bhubaneswar
- Jammu
- Goa
- Shimla
- Raipur
- Amritsar
- Jaipur
- Chennai
- Hyderabad
- Surat
- Ranchi
The Government plans to expand e-passport issuance to all Passport Seva Kendras (PSKs) across the country by mid-2025.
Is It Mandatory for Existing Passport Holders to Replace Their Passport with an ePassport?
No, it is not mandatory for current passport holders to replace their existing passports with e-passports. All passports issued by the Government of India will remain valid until their validity expiry date. Once a Passport Office is technically enabled for the issuance of an ePassport, the citizens applying under that Passport Office will get the ePassport.
