Design

The standard iPhone 17 keeps things familiar with a practical design similar to the iPhone 16, but it feels fresher thanks to new color options, a brighter and slightly larger display, and Ceramic Shield 2 on the front.

On the other hand, the all-new iPhone Air takes design to the next level, coming as the thinnest iPhone ever at just 5.6mm. It flaunts a titanium frame, thin bezels, and the combination of Ceramic Shield on the back with Ceramic Shield 2 on the front. The camera sensor of the Air is placed inside a slim, pill-shaped module that blends seamlessly with the back panel.

Meanwhile, the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max sport a redesigned aluminum body with a bold new camera module that now dominates nearly half of the upper rear panel. Ceramic Shield also covers both the front and the back for added scratch protection.

Display

The iPhone 17 and 17 Pro both feature a 6.3-inch display, the iPhone 17 Pro Max stretches to a 6.9-inch panel, while the iPhone Air sits in between with a 6.5-inch screen. All models now use Apple's Super Retina XDR display with ProMotion up to 120Hz and an 3,000 nits peak brightness.

The real highlight this year is ProMotion itself. Previously exclusive to the Pro models, Apple has finally brought 120Hz refresh rate to the standard model, making the entire lineup smoother for scrolling, gaming, and everyday use.

Performance, Software, and Battery

The standard iPhone 17 is powered by the new A19 Bionic chip, built on the most advanced 3nm process. It features a 6-core CPU with two performance and four efficiency cores, a 5-core GPU, and a 16-core Neural Engine designed to handle AI-driven tasks with ease.

The iPhone Air, along with the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max, steps up to the A19 Pro chip. This not only unlocks advanced features like Clean Up in Photos, Apple Intelligence tools, and high-end graphics, but also delivers Apple's fastest CPU yet and its most advanced GPU.

Each GPU core comes with a built-in Neural Accelerator and the CPU is up to 40% faster than the iPhone 14 Pro's chip. Even the Pro models also include a vapor chamber for improved heat management during heavy use.

On the software front, all models ship with iOS 26, bringing the new Liquid Glass design and a bunch of Apple Intelligence features such as live translation, call screening, and upgraded photo editing tools.

In terms of battery, the iPhone 17 offers up to 30 hours of video playback, while the iPhone Air manages 27 hours. The iPhone 17 Pro stretches that to 31 hours, and the Pro Max leads the pack with an impressive 37 hours.

Cameras

The iPhone 17 features a dual-camera setup with a 48MP Fusion Main camera that supports 2x optical-quality telephoto, paired with a 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide camera. While the new iPhone Air sports a single 48MP Fusion camera system that works like multiple advanced cameras in one.

For those who want the ultimate in mobile photography, the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max could be the perfect picks, boasting an upgraded 48MP triple camera system with multiple zoom levels, including an exclusive 8x telephoto lens on the Pro Max. They also offer professional-grade video features like ProRes RAW and Log 2. On the front, all models share an 18MP Center Stage selfie camera with support for Ultra-stabilised video and Dual Capture video.

Pricing and Storage

Apple has bumped up the base storage this year for the standard iPhone 17, now starting at 256GB. Priced at ₹82,900 in India, it also comes in a 512GB option that retails for ₹1,02,900.

The iPhone Air price in India is set at ₹1,19,900 for the 256GB model, with the 512GB variant priced at ₹1,39,900, and the high-end 1TB model will cost ₹1,59,900.

On the other hand, the iPhone 17 Pro starts at ₹1,34,900 for 256GB, ₹1,54,900 for 512GB, and ₹1,74,900 for the 1TB option. The iPhone 17 Pro Max is the most expensive of the lineup, starting at ₹1,49,900 for 256GB, ₹1,69,900 for 512GB, ₹1,89,900 for 1TB, and going all the way up to ₹2,29,900 for the massive 2TB variant.

Which One's for You?

Choosing between the four new iPhones ultimately comes down to your priorities and budget. The iPhone 17 feels like the most balanced choice in the lineup, making it worth the spend for those looking to upgrade.

At the same time, Apple has slashed the price of the iPhone 16, which now starts at ₹69,900 – and with upcoming festive sales, you can get it for even less. So, if you don't want to spend over ₹80,000, the iPhone 16 remains a solid value pick.

If design is at the top of your list, the iPhone Air could be the one with its ultra-thin 5.6mm profile and titanium frame. While it is a bit costly, almost the same as the Pro models, it doesn't offer the same camera versatility as the Pro models.

If you want to experience high-end performance with advanced photography and videography features, the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max are the models to look at. Ultimately, the choice is up to you.
