Small-Town India Is Driving Premium Laptops, iPads & QLED TVs — Not Just Metros

Festive shopping in India has always been seen as a metro-driven affair. Big-city buyers were the ones splurging on premium phones, high-end TVs, or luxury goods, while smaller towns were thought to be more cautious, sticking to budget buys. This year, that assumption doesn’t hold up.

Small-Town India Is Buying Premium This Festive Season

Fresh numbers from Amazon’s GST Bachat Utsav show that Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities are now at the center of India’s premium shopping story. From laptops and iPads to dishwashers and health supplements, shoppers outside metros are picking up products that signal aspiration as much as utility.

The Shift Toward Premium

One of the clearest signals is in electronics. Smartphones priced above ₹20,000 grew by 50 percent, and premium TVs — QLEDs and Mini-LEDs — saw double-digit growth. Traditionally, these were categories where metros dominated. Today, smaller towns are driving much of the growth, showing that the appetite for better tech is spreading rapidly.

The shift isn’t limited to gadgets. MacBooks, iPads, and luxury beauty products are also finding buyers in non-metro markets. For families, these are more than just purchases — they represent a move toward lifestyles once seen as “big city only.”

Lifestyle Upgrades Go Mainstream

The data also highlights how households are using festive sales to make life easier. Dishwashers grew 120 percent, inverter batteries doubled, and kitchen appliances rose 50 percent. For years, these were “nice to have” items. Now, they’re moving into the “need to have” category, as families — even in smaller towns — put a premium on convenience.

This isn’t just about chasing luxury; it’s about reclaiming time. When appliances reduce daily chores, families gain back hours for work, leisure, or rest. That’s an upgrade many households are willing to invest in.

Health Joins the Festive Cart

Wellness has quietly become one of the fastest-growing categories in festive sales. Demand for whey protein rose 180 percent, vitamins and supplements climbed 250 percent, and treadmills were up 66 percent. Even premium food items like nuts, fruits, and protein spreads are seeing higher sales.

For years, festive shopping meant sweets, snacks, and indulgence. This year’s numbers suggest that buyers are equally interested in stocking up on health-focused products — a sign that well-being is now part of how people celebrate and spend.

Beyond Electronics

Perhaps the most surprising trend is mobility. Two-wheeler sales grew 150 percent online, breaking the notion that vehicles remain an offline-only category. Smart home bundles pairing speakers with bulbs, plugs, and cameras are also finding takers, showing how connected living is gaining ground.

At the same time, shopping as entertainment is picking up. Amazon Live, which lets creators stream product showcases, recorded six times more views this season, with most of that traffic coming from Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities. For many, browsing and buying are now social activities, not just transactions.
