India’s Record Heat Sees 75% Increase in Alexa AC Requests, Says Amazon
As summer temperatures reached unprecedented highs across India, the use of Alexa to manage air conditioners soared. In the last week of May, when the nation experienced its hottest temperatures ever, Amazon reported a 75% increase in requests to Alexa to control AC units compared to March 2024.
Alexa Commands for ACs Surge Amid Record Heat
During late May's sweltering temperatures, Indian users increasingly turned to Alexa to help manage their home environments. Amazon saw a notable uptick in requests to "switch the AC on," suggesting that Alexa-compatible air conditioners were working overtime to provide relief from the heat. Interestingly, there was a slower rise in commands to turn AC units off, indicating that many systems were running longer than usual to maintain cooler indoor temperatures.

This spike in usage represents a broader trend, with a 12.5% year-over-year increase in Alexa commands specifically for AC control. Such commands include, "Alexa, switch on/off the AC," demonstrating the growing integration of voice assistants in everyday life to manage home comfort.
Increasing Adoption of Alexa for Smart Home Automation
The reliance on Alexa isn't limited to just air conditioning. There has been a 33% year-over-year growth in using Alexa to control smart fans, as users seek additional ways to stay cool. Commands like "Alexa, switch on/off the fan" are becoming commonplace, reflecting the broader adoption of smart home technology to enhance convenience and efficiency.
Alexa routines are also gaining popularity among Indian users. These routines allow users to automate various tasks, like adjusting the temperature at specific times without having to issue individual commands each time. For example, users can set a "goodnight" routine where Alexa turns off the lights, lowers the temperature, and plays sleep sounds with a single command. This feature has become a staple for many, simplifying daily home management.
Expanding Smart Home Ecosystem in India
The integration of Alexa into Indian households is not just about cooling during the summer. Over the past three years, Amazon has recorded a 200% increase in the number of smart home devices connected to Alexa. This surge includes devices like smart lights, plugs, fans, TVs, security cameras, water heaters, and air purifiers.
Additionally, requests to control these smart devices have doubled, indicating a growing trend towards a more connected and automated lifestyle. Users are increasingly relying on voice commands to manage various aspects of their home, from lighting to security, enhancing both convenience and energy efficiency.
