Driven by its innovative spirit, India is evolving into a global tech leader with a large user base that's ready to adopt new technologies faster than any other market. Some of the recent innovations in the Indian tech scene not only address daily challenges faced by Indians but also tend to solve complex social issues. Besides, some of these indigenous technologies are also making a significant impact across the globe, directly competing against the big tech companies of the world.

Here are five notable benchmarks of Indian innovation that highlight the country's potential to become a key player in the global technology landscape and ready to transform the lives of billions.

Gadgets and Digital Services that Showcase Indian Innovation

Affordable Tablet Computers

EPIC Foundation has introduced an indigenously manufactured Education Tablet. This device is designed by VVDN Technologies in collaboration with MediaTek India and CoRover.ai.

The company plans to manufacture up to three lakh tablets aimed at state governments. Although commercial manufacturing hasn't started yet, they have signed an MoU for over 12,000 units with IRIS Global Vedavaag Systems Ltd.

Dr Ajai Chowdhry, chairman of EPIC Foundation said, "Repair expenses surpassing the cost of purchasing a new device, the production of substandard goods, and obsolescence strategies are not only pressing concerns of today but also exacerbate the escalating problem of electronic waste. Our repairable product will enable many jobs all over India for repair engineers,"

The tablet also includes the BharatGPT virtual assistant. This feature promotes digital learning and facilitates language translation between Indian languages.

EPIC Foundation's initiative aims to address several issues simultaneously. By focusing on repairability and upgradeability, they hope to reduce electronic waste significantly. This approach also creates job opportunities across India for repair engineers, contributing positively to the economy.

The introduction of this Education Tablet marks a significant step towards enhancing digital education in India. By making technology more accessible and sustainable, EPIC Foundation is setting a precedent for future innovations in the field.

This initiative aligns with the broader goal of promoting homegrown technology solutions that cater to Indian needs. As these tablets become more widely available, they are expected to play a crucial role in bridging the digital divide in education.

Growth of Digital Payments in India

Launched by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) in 2016, UPI's seamless integration into daily life has made it indispensable for millions of users. Its ability to facilitate instant money transfers between bank accounts using mobile devices without any additional cost has simplified financial transactions significantly.

The platform's user-friendly interface and robust security features have contributed to its widespread adoption. Users can make payments with just a few taps on their smartphones, eliminating the need for cash or cards.

With ongoing advancements and increasing adoption rates, UPI is poised to remain at the forefront of the digital payments revolution. The journey of UPI from a groundbreaking idea to a global phenomenon highlights India's capability to lead in technological innovation.

In recent years, NCPI has also expanded UPI in select other countries such as Dubai, Paris, and more, making it easy for Indian travellers to make digital payments wherever they travel.

Electric Two Wheelers

With rising fuel prices and increasing pollution levels, many consumers are turning to electric vehicles as a viable alternative. The Indian government has introduced several initiatives to encourage the use of electric vehicles. These include subsidies on the purchase of electric two-wheelers, tax benefits, and the development of charging infrastructure.

Such measures aim to reduce the country's dependence on fossil fuels and lower carbon emissions. This has led to a surge in electric two-wheelers and four-wheels, where several Indian brands are manufacturing EVs in India for India and also for the world.

Ola Electric is one of the players which has made a significant impact on the Indian market with its range of electric scooters. Another player in this market is Ather Energy. Known for its high-performance electric scooters, Ather Energy focuses on providing a premium riding experience with advanced features such as touchscreen dashboards and mobile app connectivity.

Besides these two significant names, there are numerous players who are very serious about EV-related solutions.

Feature Phones

India has seen a significant rise in the demand for feature phones, driven by affordability and simplicity. This trend is particularly evident in rural areas where smartphone penetration remains low. Feature phones, which offer basic functionalities like calling and texting, are becoming increasingly popular among users.

The introduction of JioPhone has played a crucial role in this surge. JioPhone, launched by Reliance Jio, offers 4G connectivity at a very low cost. This device has made internet access more affordable for millions of Indians, especially in remote regions. The JioPhone's success highlights the importance of cost-effective technology in bridging the digital divide. Where one can get a smartphone-like functionality on a feature phone for a fraction of its price.

Humanoid Robot in India (Manav)

India's journey into robotics began in the early 1980s. The initial focus is on industrial robots to enhance processes. These robots were primarily used in the automotive and electronics industries to improve efficiency and precision.

Institutions like the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) and Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) were at the forefront of this technological advancement.

The creation of Manav (a humanoid robot), which debuted at the IIT-Bombay Techfest 2014-2015, showcases the country's growing expertise in advanced technology and engineering. Man is designed to perform a variety of tasks, highlighting India's capability to develop sophisticated robotic systems.

The creation of Manav reflects India's commitment to technological advancement. The robot can walk and talk just in response to human voice commands. This project not only puts India on the map for robotics but also inspires future developments in the field.
