Alexa Turns 6 in India | Amazon says 200% Increase in Connected Smart Devices in 3 Years
Amazon recently commemorated its voice-controlled smart assistant Alexa's sixth anniversary in India. The celebration was marked not just by a reflection on the journey so far but also by the announcement of a staggering 200 per cent increase in Alexa-connected smart home devices in the country over the past three years.
This significant growth underscores the rapid adoption of smart home technology by Indian consumers, facilitated by Alexa's seamless integration into their daily lives.

The Smart Home Evolution in India
During the last three years, alongside the rise in connected devices, the retail giant witnessed a doubling in requests on Alexa for controlling compatible smart home appliances. This includes a wide array of devices such as smart lights, plugs, fans, TVs, security cameras, ACs, water heaters, and air purifiers.
The surge in utilizing smart technology signifies a broader acceptance and integration of smart solutions in Indian households, making everyday tasks more convenient and efficient.
Advancements in Smart Home Controls
Furthermore, the company noted that customers in India are advancing in their smart home endeavors. Over the past year, the use of Amazon Alexa to control smart fans and smart ACs has surged by 37 per cent, marking the highest increase among all smart home appliances.
This trend points to a growing demand for not just smart devices but also for intelligent solutions that can enhance comfort and convenience at home. Amazon also mentioned that among the most popular requests to Alexa, users can conveniently ask in English, Hindi, or Hinglish.

These include commands like "Alexa, geyser chala do" (Alexa, turn on the geyser), "Alexa, turn off AC after 15 minutes", or "Alexa, hall ki lights dim kar do" (Alexa, dim the lights in the hall). The support for local languages has undoubtedly played a significant role in Alexa's widespread acceptance and use across diverse Indian households.
The Future of Smart Homes in India
"Since we launched Alexa and Echo smart speakers in India, the smart home sector has evolved significantly, and voice technology has played a massive role in this," said Parag Gupta, Director and Country Manager, Amazon Devices, India.
The ease of setting up a smart home, facilitated by devices like smart bulbs and plugs that can be instantly controlled with Alexa, is making the concept of smart homes more accessible and appealing to the Indian consumer. This evolving trend suggests that the smart home revolution in India is just getting started, with voice technology at its heart.
