Apple’s HomeView May Get A New Job As A Home Security Camera: All Details

Apple's new HomeView smart display may soon get another use beyond managing connected devices and making FaceTime calls. A recent discovery in its software suggests that the device may also be able to monitor activity at home, stream live video and record footage using its built-in camera.

Apple’s HomeView May Get A New Job As A Home Security Camera

The feature has been spotted in HomeView Software 27.2 by a Reddit user, as per a report in The Verge. Apple hasn't announced any such feature yet, so do take this information with a pinch of salt. Now that we have that cleared up, let's take a look at the details.

Apple HomeView Could Get Security Camera Features

Reddit user pdfu found references to a security camera mode in the HomeView 27.2 code. The setup page reportedly includes a message stating that the device can be used as a security camera with HomeKit Secure Video.

HomeView already has a built-in camera for FaceTime calls and facial recognition. The software references suggest that Apple could expand its use to include motion detection, live streaming and video recording.

The camera could also offer different operating modes. Users may be able to switch it off completely, enable motion detection without recording, allow live streaming, or turn on both streaming and recording. This would give users more control over how the camera operates, depending on what they need.

HomeView Camera Could Adjust To Your Home Routine

The leaked references also suggest that HomeView's camera could respond to the household's status. For instance, users may be able to set it to record activity when everyone is away and stop recording when someone returns home.

This could make the device more useful for people who want to keep an eye on their home without having to manage the camera manually every time they leave.

The camera may also include privacy alerts. A green indicator and an audible notification could let people know when the camera is being accessed or starts recording. Household members may also receive alerts when camera settings are changed.

These details are based on software references, however, and Apple has not confirmed how the feature will work.

If this feature indeed makes it to the HomeView, what are your thoughts on it? Let us know and keep watching this space for more such updates.
