Apple Reportedly Working on AirPods Pro With IR Cameras and New H3 Chip: What We Know So Far
Apple isn’t done with its audio lineup just yet. After the recent launch of the AirPods Pro 3, the company is said to be developing new versions of both its Pro and standard AirPods — and there’s talk of a next-generation H3 chip that could power them.

Apple’s Next AirPods Pro May Include IR Cameras
Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reports that Apple is working on a new version of the AirPods Pro featuring integrated infrared (IR) cameras. These cameras could enable new gesture controls and enhanced tracking, potentially improving how the earbuds interact with Apple’s ecosystem — especially Vision Pro.
If these reports are accurate, the next AirPods Pro might also debut with the H3 chip. The new chip is expected to boost wireless performance, deliver lower latency, and offer improved sound clarity. While there’s no launch date yet, Gurman hints that the model with IR cameras could arrive sometime next year.
The AirPods 5 Could Add Smarter Health and AI Features
Apple also appears to be working on the AirPods 5, which will likely succeed the AirPods 4 lineup. This model might skip a heart-rate sensor but include new health-oriented tools like temperature tracking. Reports suggest the AirPods 5 could also benefit from Apple’s ongoing push into AI, possibly using on-device intelligence to adapt sound output based on user context — like adjusting noise cancellation or audio profiles automatically.

The AirPods 5 are also expected to feature a refined design and updated internals for better efficiency, though Apple hasn’t confirmed any official details.
The H3 Chip: Apple’s Next Big Audio Upgrade
The new H3 chip is reportedly in development to replace the H2 chip introduced in 2022. This chipset could play a central role in future AirPods by improving connectivity, latency, and overall sound quality. Apple may also integrate AI-based processing within the chip, allowing future AirPods to offer smarter adaptive audio experiences.
