Facebook is building a voice-activated video chat device “Portal”
The upcoming video chat device is designed for using in the home.
Apparently Facebook has been trying its hands on a lot of things. In the past few months, we have come across many reports suggesting that the social network giant is trying its luck in consumer electronics goods. Likewise, financial news site Cheddar has come up with some interesting information. According to its recently report citing anonymous sources, the company is working on a home video chat device dubbed as "Portal".
The news of Facebook's sudden entry into the foray of voice activated devices doesn't really come as a surprise. In recent time, AI-powered smart speakers have been generating a lot of interest among the customers. While currently, Amazon's Echo is dominating the market, Google Home is not far behind. Apple has also launched its own smart speaker called HomePod which is powered by Siri.
Coming back to the latest report, let's get into the details of the Portal.
Features of the Portal
As per the report, the Portal will be equipped with a large 15-inch screen and a range of microphones. Moreover, the video chat device will feature a wide-angle camera with facial recognition technology. With this feature, it will be able to identify friends associated with user's Facebook account. Kind of similar to Amazon's Echo Show, it will function based on the user's voice commands. The product is being manufactured by the company's secretive Building 8 lab.
Pricing and availability of the Portal
As we have already mentioned the features of the Portal, let's have a look at the other aspects. The device is likely to arrive pre-loaded with a slew of third-party apps like Netflix and Spotify. The report has revealed the expected pricing of the product. As per the pricing details, the device will cost $499 (approximately Rs. 31,735).
Facebook is said to announce the Portal in early May this year at the annual developer conference. However, it will be made available for purchase only in the second half of 2018. It is worth mentioning that with the launch of the Portal, Mark Zuckerberg's company will enter the hardware market.
Previous reports
Last year in August, a report by DigiTimes had claimed that Facebook is prepping a touch-screen operated smart speaker. Interestingly, this report had also said that the device will feature a 15-inch inbuilt touch display and will be designed by Facebook's experimental Building 8. However, it was speculated that the speaker will be unveiled in the first quarter of 2018, which is quite unlikely.
Around the same time, Bloomberg had also reported that Facebook is making a video chat device for use in home. The report even referred to it as the company's "first major hardware product". In line with the latest report, the report said that the device will come with a wide-angle camera, and AI-powered microphones and speakers.
